About the Position: The U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY is an academic institution located in the Hudson River Valley, 50 miles from New York City. The historic site is the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. West Point is a self-contained city with housing, a Department of Public Works, libraries, hospital, fire department, chapels, and restaurants. Employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theater, Hudson Valley's performing arts center, and recreational facilities.

Duties

Serve as a Shift Supervisor for the Security Guard force assigned under the authority of the Senior Commander at IMCOM supported installations. Exercise direct supervision of the activities of a guard force shift responsible for providing 24-hour maximum-security measures against theft, fire, accident, pilferage, trespass, sabotage, and espionage. Make decisions according to the nature of perceived threat such as demonstrators or other organized subversive actions. Develop training plans based on approved training courses and regulatory requirements. Supervise training for guard personnel in the use of weapons, protection against espionage, sabotage, and other organized subversive actions. Plan work to be accomplished by subordinates, set and adjust short-term priorities, and prepare schedules for completion of work. Receive and review daily reports from subordinates and ensures the correction of reported irregularities. Set employee standards for performance and prepares performance evaluations based on employee compliance. Recommend promotions, reassignments, and sustained or outstanding performance awards.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • The incumbent must undergo and pass pre-employment and annual medical exams of physical, emotional, and mental stability.
  • The incumbent will be required to maintain physical conditioning and pass an annual physical agility test (PAT).
  • The incumbent must be assigned for mandatory drug testing and must agree to submit to a urinalysis on a recurring basis in accordance with Army Regulation 600-85.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • Position is subject to the provisions of the Domestic Violence Offender Gun Ban (the Lautenberg Amendment). This act bans individuals convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence and certain others from possession or access to firearms or ammunition.
  • Due to the nature of this position, incumbent is required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime, and is subject to recall for periods of emergency overtime.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
  • This position requires certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation with Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) training.
  • The incumbent must wear the Department of the Army Security Guard (DASG) uniform in accordance with Army Regulation 190-56, maintaining a high state of appearance and hygiene.
  • The incumbent must be proficient in the use of assigned firearms/weapons, pass an initial qualification, and must qualify semi-annually thereafter in the use of assigned firearms/weapons.
  • The incumbent may be required to wear chemical protection masks, gloves, and other protective equipment, and may be required to be certified in the use of aerosol irritants and baton.
  • In accordance with Army Regulation 190-56, requirements of Individual Reliability Program apply.
  • The incumbent must be able to obtain and sustain state certification for operating the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) terminals.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles. Incumbent must be fully qualified to operate a government vehicle.
  • The incumbent must successfully complete security guard training.
  • The incumbent must obtain and maintain applicable certifications in operating various electronic equipment and sensors.
  • The incumbent must be able to perform as a member of the installation's overall security response capability requiring the incumbent to carry and deploy a riot baton, carry a protective shield and employ non-lethal ammunitions if necessary.
  • This position is supervisory as defined by the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) General Schedule Supervisory Guide (GSSG). A one year probation to assess your ability to perform supervisory duties is required unless previously completed.
