Incumbent performs technical work in support of diagnostic radiology under the direction of a physician. Operates radiology equipment both mobile and fixed and assists the radiologist in fluoroscopic procedures as part of the diagnostic plan for patients. Supports radiologist or other medical providers to produce radiographic studies used to diagnose medical conditions. They will also be a liaison to the radiology students as it pertains to their clinical education while at SLVHCS.
Duties
Duties:
Receives requests or instructions for procedures. Interprets requests or instructions from radiologist or medical officers.
Performs as technologist in charge on less demanding shifts or in a detached clinic.
Independently interprets and carries out the requests made by physicians.
Receives assignments for very difficult examinations.
Employee understands and carries out the requests made by physicians or seeks assistance of the supervisor or a higher graded technologist when an uncommon, unique, or new procedure is required.
Secures the confidence and cooperation of patients during procedures. Explains procedures, positions patients for desired results, and cushions and shields patients as appropriate.
Varies procedures or positions to adjust for patients' medical conditions. Independently explains procedures and positions patients for very difficult procedures.
Administers contrast materials orally, by enema, or, in some circumstances, intravenously under close supervision.
Determines technical factors, sets controls, and operates equipment.
Maintains supplies and assists with stocking rooms.
Independently makes routine radiographic examinations of head, trunk, and extremities for diagnosis of illness or injuries.
Operates computerized radiography as well as conventional Radiology equipment. Determines technical factors (i.e., calculates the correct exposure factors or time, distance, kilovoltage, and milliamperage), sets controls and operates equipment ensuring that the portion of the body specified receives the correct calculated exposure.
Selects and sets technical factors for very difficult radiographic examinations. Sets up and adjusts accessory equipment required and makes exposures necessary for requested procedures. Ensures ALARA principle is applied. (As low as reasonably achievable).
As a team member with a radiologist, performs procedures such as IVP, urethrograms, G.I. series. modified barium swallow, and barium and air contrast barium enemas. Sets up the X-ray room.
Schedules patients for examinations.
Registers patients for examinations and updates status as necessary. Performs clerical duties as they relate to patient care within the section.
Reviews new developments in the field and recommends to the head of the unit adoption of chose which would improve the operations of the radiology section.
Cleans and sterilizes equipment and area after use. Performs routine maintenance and recognizes and reports malfunctioning equipment to ensure repair.
Performs picture archival (PACS) duties. The technologist captures computerized radiographs, applies an algorithm, configures the image, and verifies patient information before transmitting them to the picture archive system.
In addition to the duties above, this employee will be the clinical coordinator for the student radiology program. They will train the students with all the necessary information. They will ensure the students come to clinicals on time and will ensure professionalism and the best care to our veterans.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable.
Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).
Credentialing Standards: Public Law 97-35, the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981, requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75, Standards for the Accreditation of Educational Programs and the Credentialing of Radiographic Personnel. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation and is accredited by an organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and be certified as radiographers in their field.
*Grandfathering Provision. All persons employed in VHA as a DRT on the effective date December 13, 2019 of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series and grade held, including positive education and certification that are part of the basic requirements of the DRT occupation.
GS-9: Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist
Experience.At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (Gs-8), directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level.
In addition, candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
*Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures.
Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers.
*Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure.
Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography.
Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions
Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients
Preferred Experience: Past Clinical Instructor Experience

Physical Requirements: The physical demands of the work includes: Heavy lifting, 45 pounds and over; moderate carrying, 15-44 pounds; pushing up to 4 hours; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers, good dexterity (both hands required); prolonged walking, prolonged standing; repeated bending; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing (aid permitted); speed in working; and emotional stability.-English Language Proficiency.
