This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until December 29, 2023. Duties
The position is part of the Equipment Repair Shop under the Maintenance & Repair Section of Facilities Management Service (FMS), located at the Lyons Campus of the VA New Jersey Health Care System (VANJHCS).
The Maintenance Mechanic performs maintenance and repairs of the Emergency Power System, the Medical Gas System, automatic doors and a wide variety of general maintenance tasks in support of new construction projects, minor improvements and renovation work to include equipment maintenance, repair, assembly, disassembly and installation.
The Emergency Power Systems includes, but is not limited to, 13 Caterpillar and 1 Kohler emergency generators, ranging from 100KW to 2MW, 54 automatic and Manual transfer switches ranging from 208 VAC to 4160 VAC, 13 Veeder-Root UST monitors, and all components related to the Emergency Power System.
The Medical Gas System consists of a centralized Bulk Oxygen Tank, piping and regulators, isolation valves and 220 point of use outlets. The Medical Gas System is also comprised of various individual medical air and vacuum systems located in patient occupied buildings.Duties may include but are not limited to:
Performance of routine preventive maintenance (PM) duties on the power generators includes checks oil, antifreeze, block heaters, electric motors, control panels, fuel system, checks piping for leaks, fuel tanks, fuel tanks sump, fuel tanks fill sump, fuel tanks monitoring system, day tank, day tank pumps, day tank piping, day tank controls and control panels, as well as transfer switches (there are approx. 8 to 10 transfer switches per generator);
Monthly PM duties include changing belts, oil, antifreeze, hoses, fuel line custom hoses made on location, fuel filters, fuel piping, fuel tanks monitoring system and intrinsic tests done to monitor for leaks;
Weekly Medical Gas System PM duties include checks on all medical air pumps, medical vacuum pumps andoxygen systems located throughout seven (7) medical buildings dedicated to patient care;
Monthly Medical Gas System PM duties include filter change. Annual PM includes oil changes and filter changes;
Repairs and maintenance for a wide variety of mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and pneumatic equipment;
Maintenance and adjustment of automatic doors;
Surface mounting of any item (i.e. handrails, fans, shelving, furniture, exercise equipment) to walls/floors/ceilings by being glued, fastened, screwed, bolted or by any acceptable means of attachment;
Assembly/disassembly/repair/adjustment/alteration/installation/fabrication in order to maintain beds, stretchers, furniture, desks, chairs, fences, ventilation systems, AC ducting systems, wheelchairs, metal doors, metal trolleys, carts, grab bars, food carts, filing cabinets, lifts, washing machines, dryers, metal lockers, cage partitions, wall partitions, guardrails, kitchen equipment, machines primarily used in housekeeping, shop equipment both fixed and portable, and other miscellaneous items;
Basic welding and cutting, working with metal, plastic and other non-wood products by measuring, cutting, drilling, fitting, troubleshooting and correcting malfunctions;
Repair of electric motors, block heaters, and other small items to be used as spares;
Assists in maintaining adequate shop stock, tools, materials, on hand to perform daily routine jobs arid preventative maintenance;
Oversees major repairs performed by contractors on the premises; and
May be designated as a Contracting Officer Representative (COR) for specific procurement contracts.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm; subject to overtime and emergency callbacks, as the needs of the facility demand.

A valid state issued driver's license is PREFERRED to be able to occasionally travel to the Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs).

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
