The Assistant Chief of Sterile Processing Service (SPS) is one who demonstrates strong management and leadership skills. Accountable to the Chief Nurse of (SPS), the Assistant Chief of SPS is considered a first-level supervisor responsible for delegated management and staff functions of the Lead Medical Supply Tech and all other Medical Supply Techs in SPS. Selectee will have to travel to the different locations including Montgomery AL, Columbus GA and other (CAVHCS) locations.
Duties
Assists the Chief Nurse of SPS in management and oversight of decontamination, preparation, sterilization, monitoring, and distribution of sterilized and reusable medical equipment (RME). Accountable for assisting with all departmental administrative operations such as: monthly staffing schedules, employee leave approval, and maintenance of attendance records and shift reports.
Incumbent will assign work with standing instructions on objectives, priorities/deadlines, and provide guidance for unusually involved situations. The incumbent is self-directed; has a strong knowledge base of surgical instrumentation/sterility principles; demonstrates effective decision-making skills; and is responsible for working with leadership to establish and evaluate standards of performance for clinical areas to ensure safe and effective operations.
Responsible for the quality management system activities within SPS to include: employee training, competency assessment, as well as development and enforcement of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's). Manages, directs, and adapts work to accomplish program goals and objectives to meet new and changing program requirements.
The incumbent serves as a liaison between SPS and other departments by maintaining strong internal and external customer service skills while supporting the VA mission.
Knowing patient safety is of the highest priority, the Assistant Chief of SPS will be responsible for promoting a culture of safety and fully cooperate in efforts to improve patient safety and eradicate potential harmful events resulting in actual/potential injuries to patients.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Experience: Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or
Education: One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; or
Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combination of experience and education; or
Grandfathering Provision: Current Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) employed in VHA on or before July 8, 2015 (copy of most recent SF-50 required).
English Language Proficiency: Medical Supply Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA policy.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation).
Preferred Experience: 1 to 2 years of sterile processing experience.
Grade Determinations:
This position requires one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-8. Examples of specialized experience include; Distributes and prioritizes workload among employees in accordance with established workflow and/or job specializations. Assures an even workflow and distribution of the workload. Revises work schedules to meet anticipated and unanticipated changes in the workload. Assigns work to staff based on experience and training needs. Monitors and reports on the status of work. Ensures SOPs and SPS mandates are followed during the performance of workflow. Reviews work in progress or spot checks work not requiring review to ensure completed work meets supervisors' instructions on such things as work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines. Assesses the quality and quantity of work by reviewing the cleaning, reprocessing, and distribution of technical medical equipment, material and instrumentation. Provides information to management officials concerning performance issues, assignment changes and task completion. Instructs employees on work-related activities, policies, procedures and goal.

Ability to perform a full range of supervisory duties, including assigning, planning and evaluating work, recommending awards, approving leave, identifying training needs, and resolving staff issues.
Ability to evaluate new products and equipment, develop options, and make recommendations.
Ability to manage, interpret, and present fiscal data (i.e. fund controls, contracts and equipment expenditures), forecast resource and equipment needs and administer an allocated budget.

Physical Requirements: The work is performed in various settings: decontamination, preparation, and clean sterile supply (preparation). You may be required to work in areas that are hot, cold, drafty and poorly lighted. You are subject to the possibility of falls, scrapes, cuts, bruises, and other injuries from material handling equipment. The work requires standing and walking during the entire workday and frequent bending and lifting of packages (occasionally weighing as much as 50 pounds.) The work requires dexterity and visual acuity for manipulating, disassembly and assembly of instrumentation.
