This position is located in the Special Collections Directorate, Researcher and Collections Services. The position description number for this position is 413022. The salary range indicated reflects the locality pay adjustment for the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan area. The incumbent of this position will work a flextime work schedule. This is a non-supervisory, non-bargaining unit position. Relocation expenses will not be authorized for the person(s) selected under this vacancy announcement.

Duties

The Special Assistant provides technical, operational, administrative, and program guidance in support of the Special Collections Directorate’s mission to build, steward, and promote use and engagement with special format collections within the Library Collections and Services Group (LCSG) of the Library of Congress. The incumbent assists divisions within the Directorate and other units throughout the Library as required, as well as with other collaborative projects and activities with stakeholders. The incumbent provides guidance and support in the form of program and project plans, reports, analytic studies, communications, correspondence, and memoranda on a wide range of complex matters to fulfill program goals and operational requirements. In performing the duties of the position, the Special Assistant exercises judgment, strong communication and analytical skills, effective collaboration, and an in-depth understanding and familiarity with Directorate and Library operations.

Applicants must have had progressively responsible experience and training sufficient in scope and quality to furnish them with an acceptable level of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision. Ability to plan and manage projects or programs.** Ability to coordinate and execute sensitive and/or complex assignments that support the goals and objectives of the organization.** Ability to analyze organizational and operational problems and develop solutions.** Ability to provide consultation and liaison duties. Ability to analyze problems and make recommendations. Ability to communicate effectively in writing and review and assess the writing of others. Ability to communicate effectively other than in writing.
