We expect to fill two vacancies at this time; however, additional positions may be filled from this announcement if they become available.

Duties

Develop and evaluate data and methods for the documentation, analysis, and prediction of the effects of fuels treatments on other natural resources. Provide specialized and professional guidance and advice in the development and planning of prescribed fire, fuels management, and other vegetation treatment/rehabilitation programs following wildfire. Develop projects and serve as the Interdisciplinary Team Lead and assures projects comply with the NEPA process. Coordinate and develop fire management input into the Bureau planning activities to ensure full integration of fire and vegetation manipulation and restoration within ecosystem management principles. Provide ecology, plant and monitoring input to fuels, restoration, and ESR documents in a timely manner to meet various deadlines and resource needs. Provide written responses for fire ecology, plant, and monitoring issues as it relates to the planning and environmental analysis process. Serve as the liaison between the wildland fire suppression organization and the field office staff.

Qualifications

Basic Education Requirements: The OPM Qualification Standard for the 0401 series includes requirements as stated below. It is the applicant's responsibility to provide documentation or proof that he or she has met the applicable educational provisions described in this supplemental standard. No applicant may be placed in a position covered by the 0401 Qualification Standard with out meeting A or B below. A. Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related discipline appropriate to the position. -OR- B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. AND Specialized Experience Requirements: In addition to meeting the basic education requirements, you must meet specialized experience requirements. we must be able to determine that you meet the basic education requirements and the specialized experience requirement please be sure to include this information in your resume. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade of the position to be filled. No assumptions will be made about your experience. For GS-09: In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: performed developmental assignments under direct supervision included professional and technical functions related to a natural resource management program; assisted with reviewing and reporting analysis inventory data; documented, evaluated, and reported changes in natural resources status. -OR- Education: Successful completion of a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree OR two full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree with a major in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. - OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. For GS-11: In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: participated in the planning and execution of ecological or biological studies with a limited number of variables; performed established, standardized tests and analyses on a broad range of biological samples; conducted studies using established fact-finding and evaluation procedures; conducting long-term monitoring of biological or ecosystem components; working with organizations, state and local government agencies, volunteers, and local communities to implement conservation and recreation programs; Assisted in the preparation of professionally acceptable planning and/or compliance documents; or other related work. -OR- Education: Successful completion of at least three years of progressively higher-level graduate education, leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or a discipline directly related to the work of this position. - OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. If you are a current Federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade level. Physical Demands: The work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of walking, standing, crouching, or UTV's over rough, uneven, or rocky terrain. Overnight camping is sometimes required. The incumbent must be physically fit for periods of rigorous activity while performing work assignments. Work Environment: The work is performed outdoors in remote areas. The work involves regular and recurring exposure to moderate risks and discomfort (e.g., outdoor camping, and insect borne disease). Special safety precautions and specialized equipment are required. The incumbent will have a wide variety of physical demands varying from office work which will involve 50% of their time to the remaining 50% of their time in the field. While in the field, the incumbent will be working in areas ranging from flat to extremely steep and in temperatures from below 0 to 100+ degrees. In some instances, considerable walking to reach the work site will be required. Incumbent will adhere to all safety rules and regulations as prescribed in manuals/supplements or by the designated Safety Officer.

Education

This position has a positive education requirement which requires that you have a degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position, or a combination of education and experience---courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
