The incumbent is responsible for the efficiency and quality of imaging services, for maintenance of the records required, and for the preparation of reports on imaging operations. The main functions of the work are to supervise the technologists to perform routine and specialized imaging procedures, to maintain and improve the quality of current imaging procedures, and to administer the technical areas to provide efficient service and timely accurate results.

Duties

Duties include but are not limited to: Reviews studies for technical quality, resolves technical problems and takes appropriate corrective action. Investigation and correction of technical problems must be prompt and effective to maintain efficient operation. Assigns responsibility, reviews result, maintains records, and takes corrective action as needed for Quality Assurance for the assigned areas. Makes work assignments in the service based on workload, urgency of need, availability of equipment, and level of staff training Is qualified to perform a full range of diagnostic radiologic procedures, when required by personnel shortages or workload backup. Teaches and trains new personnel in Radiologic Technology, reviews technologists in basic physics and radiologic instrumentation theory, and plans and implements staff In-Service Training programs. Plans requests for Personnel Action, writes position descriptions and performance plans, interviews applicants, manages time and leave system, counsels' staff on performance evaluation and grievances, and initiates disciplinary action. Work Schedule: This Position supports 24/7 operations throughout the calendar year. Work is typically performed on the day shift with alternating weekends on duty. Candidate may be subject to overtime work, shift work, and/or work on rotating shifts to include evenings, weekends, and holidays. Subject to call back outside tour of duty. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable]. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).] Physical Requirements. English Language Proficiency Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements, completion of 1 year of progressively complex experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled which demonstrates knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics that are directly related to the specific assignment. For GS 10, completion of 1 year of experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level and directly related to the position being filed. Experience at the next lower level includes: Employees at this level are fully functional as an advanced DRT and carry out their assigned tasks independently. DRTs at this level may have varying assignments including special and complex imaging procedures beyond the full performance level, clinical instruction, and basic Quality Management type duties within the program. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): *Ability to analyze organizational, technical, and administrative problems and to develop and implement solutions that result in efficient section operation. Ability to evaluate quality management procedures and processes. *Ability to analyze and use data effectively to manage workload, quality, performance, and productivity. *Skill in developing new policies and guidelines as needed Preferred experience in CT or MRI Provide non-award SF-50 as proof of time in grade. Physical Requirements: The physical demands of the work includes: Heavy lifting, 45 pounds and over; moderate carrying, 15-44 pounds; pushing up to 4 hours; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers, good dexterity (both hands required); prolonged walking, prolonged standing; repeated bending; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing (aid permitted); speed in working; and emotional stability. Must have the ability to stand and work while wearing a lead apron for possibly long periods of time.
