This position is located in the Engineering Service at New Orleans VA Medical Center in New Orleans, LA.

Duties

The High Voltage Electrician performs duties associated with high voltage electrical maintenance and facility electrical maintenance. Major duties and responsibilities include but not limited to: Cleaning, adjusting and repairing electrical equipment such as air, oil and vacuum circuit breakers and remote control supervisory and telemetering equipment Constructing and installing rigid conduits, pulling in conductors, assembling bus bars and phase out and connect conductors Troubleshooting overhead and underground cable systems to locate shorts, opens, grounds, crosses, electrolysis damage, capacitance imbalance or cable breaks Checking condition of transformers, switches, capacitor equipment, and cables; transformer operating temperatures and voltage at secondary terminals and make repairs to defective loose or corroded connections; ground wire connections and cables for cracks breaks, breaks corrosion and punctures; and cracks or breaks in walls of manholes or vaults visually Coordinating testing of insulating oil from transformers and oil switches for breakdown and contamination Pumping water from manholes, remove debris, and repair ground bonds Maintaining street and helicopter pad lighting systems; and maintaining and repairing diesel and gas-powered emergency generators and associated equipment Providing back-up and aid the Facility Electricians, which include the following: Install, modify, repair, maintain, troubleshoot, and test new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment Working from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and electrical maintenance and repair manuals to plan and lay out the routing, placement type, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity, and sage operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment, and controls Determining and placing distribution panels, boxes, fittings, and connections and install wiring, couplings, conduit, relays, fixtures, transformers, and other electrical devices including electricals service entrances Tracing hard-to locate defects or problems and completing repairs and installations with little or no advice Maintaining and repairing electrical portion of heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, and automatic operating controls, and flame protection devices for the boilers in the Power Plant Checking the work of contractors for compliance with facility standards and electrical codes Locating and marking electrical underground utilities prior to excavation Initiating electronic work orders for deficiencies found in the performance of duties Requesting preventative maintenance numbers, following procedures established by Engineering Service for newly installed equipment Contacting vendors to determine current pricing, material availability, and ordering information Performing other related duties as assigned Work Schedule: Monday to Friday; 2:00pm-10:30pm and Saturday-Sunday 10:30am-7:00pm Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized

PHYSICAL EFFORT: This position frequently perform moderately heavy lifting, pulling, and carrying of equipment and material weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds) and occasionally, they lift or pull heavy cables and equipment weighing more than 23 kilograms (50 pounds) with the help of weight handling equipment or with assistance from other workers. They use block and tackle, pulleys, or other lifting devices. They crouch, stand, kneel, and stoop while installing, repairing, or testing electrical equipment in confined spaces such as enclosed switch gear, or in structures such as overhead bus and conduit assemblies. Works above ground from aerial bucket trucks and poles, at ground level, and in trenches, or manholes. Work requires bending, stooping, climbing, and standing for long periods while installing, repairing, and testing electrical equipment in manholes and on overhead distribution lines. Position makes repairs from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms to reach equipment in out-of-the-way places. This requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring, and uncomfortable positions. Frequently handles lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds. WORK CONDITIONS: Work is inside and outside in hot, humid or cold environments. It is usually dusty, dirty, and greasy. Bad smelling fumes are sometimes present. Position is frequently exposed to the possibility of danger from high voltage electrical shock, burns from solder, sometimes serve strains, cuts, burns, noise, eye damage, bruises, and infection and is, therefore, required to use appropriate procedures and personal protective equipment. The position may be required to work with asbestos contaminated materials and will, therefore, be required to use protective clothing and equipment to eliminate possible asbestos exposure. They are exposed to danger from explosions of equipment and cables in manholes and vaults, as well as danger from high voltage electrical shock, burns from solder, broken bones, cuts, and bruises. They are exposed to heat and noise when working in substations or power-generating facilities, to extremes of weather when working outdoors, and to unpleasant odors and wet slippery surfaces when working in manholes. They are subject to electrical burns while working around high voltage electrical lines, broken bones from falls from poles, and strains from awkward work positions. They are exposed to chemicals such as insulation oil from transformers and oil switches. They use protective devices such as earplugs, safety hats, and nonconductive gloves and footwear. Position is frequently exposed to the possibility of danger from high voltage electrical shock, burns from solder, sometimes serve strains, cuts, burns, noise, eye damage, bruises, and infection. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications.
