The High Voltage Electrician is assigned to the Evening Shop and reports directly to the Maintenance Evening Supervisor. The purpose of the position is to install, modify, repair, maintain, troubleshoot, test and load new and existing high voltage electrical line, circuits, switchgear, substations, transformers, motor control centers, automatic buss switch equipment, distribution lines, and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment.
Duties
Major duties and responsibilities include:
Installs, repairs, maintains, and calibrates a wide variety of electrical equipment designated as
engineering responsibility.
Tests equipment and diagnose trouble utilizing available circuit diagrams, or if not available, traces circuits and repairs or replaces defective components.
Installs, maintains, and repair Line Isolated electrical power systems in hospital and research areas. Maintains, repairs and tests grounding, static and interference grid system in operating, cardiac, X-ray and radiation treatment areas.
Passing on to other workers the instructions received from supervisors and getting work started.
Maintaining current knowledge, and answering questions of other workers on procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives (for example, technical orders or standards and regulations).
Installs, maintain and repairs battery operated UPSs, emergency lighting and control systems.
Purchase Card Holder for Engineering service.
Update the shop Supervisor or higher supervisors regarding status and progress of work and causes of work delays.
Informing the supervisor of the need to redirect resources, beyond delegated limitation, to accommodate emergencies.
Reads circuit diagrams and performs troubleshooting layout, and complete installation, modification, and repair on high voltage distribution systems.
Interprets electronic schematics in order to diagnose problems in the electronic control circuitry.
Uses hotline tools and protective equipment such as wire tongs, wire tong supports, insulated tension links, tie sticks, insulated hoods/covers and tools, and rubber gloves, sleeves, and insulating blankets
Programs electronic relays, timers, and trips using microprocessor programming equipment.
Troubleshoots defective operation, which encompasses the following controls in system; electronic sensors, electronic scanner adjustments, pneumatic pressure controls, photo electric and remote switch activators.
Tests, repairs, and maintains essential emergency power switch gear.
Assists in emergency repairs to elevators and dumb waiters.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 2:00pm - 10:30pm and Saturday and Sunday 10:30am - 7:00pm, subject to change based on the needs of the facility.

Physical Effort: High voltage electrical workers frequently perform moderately heavy lifting, pulling, and carrying of equipment and material weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds) and occasionally, they lift or pull heavy cables and equipment weighing more than 23 kilograms (50 pounds) with the help of weight handling equipment or with assistance from other workers. They use block and tackle, pulleys, or other lifting devices. They crouch, stand, kneel, and stoop while installing, repairing, or testing electrical equipment in confined spaces such as enclosed switch gear, or in structures such as overhead bus and conduit assemblies. Workers at the grade 8 level work above ground from aerial bucket trucks and poles, at ground level, and in trenches, or manholes. Work requires bending, stooping, climbing, and standing for long periods while installing, repairing, and testing electrical equipment in manholes and on overhead distribution lines.
Working Conditions: High voltage electrical workers work indoors and outdoors. They are exposed to danger from explosions of equipment and cables in manholes and vaults, as well as danger from high voltage electrical shock, burns from solder, broken bones, cuts, and bruises. They are exposed to heat and noise when working in substations or power-generating facilities, to extremes of weather when working outdoors, and to unpleasant odors and wet slippery surfaces when working in manholes. They are subject to electrical burns while working around high voltage electrical lines, broken bones from falls from poles, and strains from awkward work positions. They are exposed to chemicals such as insulation oil from transformers and oil switches. They use protective devices such as earplugs, safety hats, and nonconductive gloves and footwear. Subject to danger of falling when working from ladders or hydraulic lifts. Exposed to dust/dirt while mixing mortar and handling materials. Work is performed in all areas of the hospital environment, inside and outside. Work is often dirty, dusty and greasy. The incumbent is subjected to such hazardous conditions as injury from power driven tools, falling from scaffolds and ladders, temperature extremes, noise, and bad weather conditions. He/she is frequently exposed to the possibilities of cuts, bruises, scratches, broken bones, and burns. She/he is subject to asbestos exposure and chemicals which can cause burns or irritation to the skin. Some duties may require incumbent to wear protective equipment and clothing that is heavy and uncomfortable. Due to the nature of the work the incumbent will be required to work on a specific shift or alternate, working on all, three shifts, including weekends and holidays. Required to drive vehicles up to 1-ton service trucks and operate aerial elevating platform vehicles. Incumbent possessing a valid driver's license must be mentally and physically able to operate a GSA Government Vehicle to carrying out his/her rudimentary duties at all Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System Community Based Outpatient Clinics (SLVHCS CBOCs). This will allow the incumbent the ability to travel and service these CBOCs and allow the clinics staff the opportunity to provide uninterrupted patient care. Incumbent will complete all required vehicle safety training and have approval from both their Supervisor and Transportation before operating any Government vehicle
