This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: This is a Marine Machinery Repairer, XF-5334-08 position with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston Operations Division.

Duties

Perform preventative maintenance, overhaul, and repair work involved in keeping or restoring district floating plant in proper operation condition. Service and adjust gasoline or diesel engines, electric motors, generators, pumps, hydraulic systems, water jet propulsion and other machinery and equipment aboard floating plant at the Galveston District. Assist higher grade mechanics and the Floating Plant Manager in assessing the status of operational equipment and detection of overheating or malfunction of bearings, brakes, or clutches, leaks in piping, or other malfunctions that may develop. Work with and assist higher graded mechanics in the repair, overhaul, and modification work of special floating plant engineering equipment powered by internal combustion engines. Operate a variety of vehicles, such as, sedans, vans, light and heavy-duty pickup trucks. Vehicles operated have GVW of less than 26,000 pounds.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Incumbent will comply with safety regulations, occupational safety and health standards, and other safety directives and orders.
  • This is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) - This position is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.
  • This position is covered by the Civilian drug testing Program. Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 5019-R, Condition of Employment for certain civilian positions identified as critical under the Drug Abuse Testing Program.
  • Incumbent must possess a valid state driver's license to operate a motor vehicle in accomplishment of assigned duties.
  • Incumbent is required to obtain and meet the requirements of a pre-employment physical examination and must be able to meet the requirements of all subsequent physical examinations.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Marine Machinery Repairer without more than normal supervision. Ability to perform common/complex preventive maintenance and repairs on equipment aboard floating plants. Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work requires frequent standing, stooping, stretching, climbing, and crouching. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. Uses coordination of eyes, hand, feet, and of legs and body in installing, repairing, or testing equipment. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed mostly out-of-doors, subject to hazards of darkness and inclement weather. Routinely works adjacent and/or over waterway. Works in close proximity to moving machinery and electrical equipment. The dams are located in isolated areas which will require extensive time out of the office. Position may require call back after duty hours and/or on weekends. Wears safety glasses, shoes, and other equipment as required.
