The housekeeping aid worker position is located within the Environmental Management Services Division of a South Texas VA Medical Center. This position performs both janitorial and custodial services (e.g., textile distribution and inventory activity, sanitizing and disinfecting, waste removal, cleaning of blinds, replacing curtains, washing windows and walls, dusting and polishing furniture and fixtures, discharge cleaning, sweeping, scrubbing and extracting, polishing floors).
Duties
These duties include, but are limited to the following
Clean, disinfect and deodorize all patient and public restrooms to include urinals, toilets, stalls, sinks, bathtubs, shower stalls, mirrors all restroom fixtures; spot clean walls and perform floor care as required
Perform high/low dusting, clean exterior surface of light fixtures, vents, medical instrument panels, night stands, and bedside tables, patient/visitor's side chair, overhead light fixtures and other auxiliary items
Replenish paper products (toilet paper, paper towels, etc.) soap, hand sanitizers, or other supplies utilized where dispensers are located. Check products with expiration dates to ensure they are not expired.
Dust furniture, walls; clean ledges, door frames, baseboards, corners, edges, hallways, stairwells and high frequency touch points (light fixtures, doorknobs, handrails and guards
Wash walls, blinds, woodwork and windows from the inside
Polish metal fixtures, clean glass doors and other glass surfaces
Moves and arranges furniture, beds, etc. in the assigned areas to accomplish cleaning tasks. May be required to move heavy furniture using the proper equipment for the specific task.
Empties trash and waste baskets, replacing trash receptacle liners. Collects and disposes of solid non-contaminated (trash) and/or regulated medical waste and recycling to central collection areas. Transport refuse and trash to the established collection points. Performs terminal cleaning of patient-discharge, inter-unit transfer, and/or long-term care patient units (Community Living Center (CLC), SCIC, PolyTrauma, etc.)
Exposure to various contagions and infections is a constant hazard as is the danger of cuts and stabs from glass, metal objects and needles found in trash, electrical shocks in equipment and slips on wet floors.
Work Schedule: 0700-1530 / 1500-2330 (weekends possible)

Physical Requirements: The position demands continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing. The work requires the occasional use of heavy powered cleaning equipment (e.g., wall washers, industrial type buffers) weighing over 50 pounds. The duties necessitate considerable dexterity, hand, foot, and eye coordination, and concentration as well as visual acuity to see dirt, dust and debris.
