About the Position: The Supervisory Librarian (Medical Sciences) directs all aspects of a full-service library program and personnel. This position serves multiple medical treatment facilities in addition to the Wilford Hall ASC. The incumbent supports patient care, medical research, and medical readiness.

Duties

Monitor team to ensure completion of objectives in adherence to policies and directives. Develop library budget with justification for personnel, books, equipments, and other relevant materials. Conduct literature searches in medical databases as appropriate to the information requested. Modify library classification schedules as needed to improve accessibility or resource expansion. Establish short and long-range library plans. Recommend improvements or advancements to library functions, such as advanced technology or additional library resources.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Moderate to heavy lifting up to 25 pounds is required.
  • A pre-placement medical examination is required.
  • Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.

Basic Requirement for Librarian (Medical Science): Degree: Completed one full academic year of graduate study in library science from an accredited college or university, in addition to completion of all work required for a bachelor's degree. (NOTE: You must attach a copy of your transcripts) OR A total of at least five years in a combination of college-level education, training, and experience. (NOTE: to qualify on this basis, the applicant must establish conclusively that the education, training, and experience provided a knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and techniques of professional librarianship; a knowledge of literature resources; and the knowledge and abilities essential for providing effective library and information services. For Librarian (Medical Sciences): Applicants must also possess specialized knowledge of a subject-matter field and/or proficiency directly related to the position being filled. Such knowledge is required for the position, an applicant's education or experience must have included or been supplemented by the requirements specified in the paragraphs below:A full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university that meets all academic requirements for a bachelor's degree that included at least 24 semester hours in the specialized field for which the applicant is being considered, e.g., physical science, biological science, social science; or that included any combination of subjects with at least 15 semester hours in a major subject (such as physics or chemistry) that is especially applicable to the position for which the applicant is being considered. OR Four years of pertinent experience of such nature and level to provide a knowledge of the basic principles, theories, practices, techniques, terminology and expressions of the appropriate discipline or subject-matter field; an understanding of the standard methods, procedures, and techniques of research and analysis in the subject-matter field; ability to acquire additional information about the field and related fields; and some knowledge of literature resources in the field. OR Any time equivalent combination of experience with education as described above. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) assisting with operational budget development; 2) assisting with research on technical and/or medical topics; 3) recommending resources in response to inquiries and/or requests; AND 4) processing library resources in accordance with catalogue guidelines. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12).
