Duties
Provide Emergency Medical Services in both front country and remote backcountry settings. Utilize the Incident Command System (ICS) during emergency response efforts. Conduct climbing patrols, searches, and rescues in a high alpine environment. Climb un-roped in 4th and easy 5th class alpine terrain.
Lead technical ice climbing routes at WI3/AI3 or harder and technical alpine climbing routes at 5.9 or harder. Lead others during helicopter rescues and during high-angle, technical rope rescue in an alpine environment. Lead others during lost-person incidents in backcountry settings.
Respond to emergency incidents carrying equipment loads of up to 50 pounds at elevations up to 14,000 feet and perform ground searches that require hiking long distances (up to 20 miles in a day) in mountainous terrain. Perform technical and non-technical carry-outs of patients in backcountry settings. Work with helicopters in mountain search and rescue operations including short-haul operations.
Provide climbing route and conditions information to visitors and issue backcountry permits and educate visitors on permit regulations, wilderness ethics and leave no trace practices.
Manage backcountry impacts by monitoring, evaluating and mitigating potential resource degradation issues.
Physical Demands: On a regular and recurring basis, the position requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion when climbing, hiking, and lifting heavy objects. Work will be performed in and around helicopters, and the employee may be short-hauled to backcountry locations to perform search and rescue duties. Work is performed on uneven, steep, rough, slippery, and rugged terrain. Work is performed outdoors, often under adverse weather conditions.
Work Environment: Most work is outdoors and is performed in temperatures from 90 degrees to below zero degrees. Work is often performed at night and/or under severe mountain weather conditions. The incumbent must frequently work on vertical rock faces at elevations up to 13,700 feet.

Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-12/05/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.
SELECTIVE FACTORS:
Mandatory Climbing Skills: Applicants must have led or shared leads on at least five Grade IV 5.9 (or higher) traditional rock climbs. Applicants must also have led or shared leads on ice climbs rated, at minimum, Water Ice 3 (WI3) or Alpine Ice 3 (AI3), and aid climbs rated Aid 2 (A2) or Clean Aid 2 (C2). To be considered for this position, you must list in your resume or other application materials the names of the climbs and the corresponding grades and ratings that satisfy the above requirements. Please list any additional technical rock, ice, and/or alpine climbing experience and your most difficult technical rock, alpine ice, or mixed climbs completed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
In addition to the mandatory selective placement factors/requirements listed above, to qualify for this position, you must demonstrate that you possess either the specialized experience or the education as described below. Equivalent combinations of experience and education may also be used to qualify:
A. One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in the federal service. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include but are not limited to the following: independently monitoring backcountry wilderness areas for damage of natural and/or cultural resources due to violations of rules and regulations by visitors; conducting wilderness patrols and making visitor contacts to ensure visitor safety and protection of resources in a park or similar recreation area; preparing reports concerning resource damage or medical emergencies; working as a mountain guide, working as a ski patroller; or performing technical search and rescue operations including rope rescue or helicopter rescue in a mountainous environment.

B. You must possess one full academic year of graduate education related to the occupation. Examples of related graduate education include: natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicant with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position to be filled. One year of full time graduate education is defined as 18 semester hours.

C. Meet at least one of the three requirements listed below for Superior Academic Achievement - Successful completion of all the requirements for a bachelor's degree (must be in a course of study that directly reflects the job-related knowledge, skills, abilities competencies necessary to satisfy the minimum qualifications and perform the duties of the position) with Superior Academic Achievement: 1) Class Standing - Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses; OR, 2) Grade-Point Average (G.P.A.) - Applicants must have a grade-point average of either (a) 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on your official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or (b) 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; OR, 3) Honor Society Membership - Applicants may be considered eligible based on membership in one of the approved national scholastic honor societies listed by the Association of College Honor Societies: https://www.achshonor.org/.
