This position is an Engineering Equipment Operator, WG-5716-9 working in Albuquerque, New Mexico, for the Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge. Duties

As an Engineering Equipment Operator, your duties will include, but are not limited to, the following: Operate a variety of tracked and wheeled heavy equipment, such as excavators, skid steers, dozers, dump trucks/trailers, motor-grader, agricultural and articulating tractors with implements, herbicide spraying equipment. Operate farm tractors with auxiliary equipment for farming, mowing, herbicide spraying, maintaining dikes and fire breaks, and other related activities. Safely excavate, build, grade, load, level and finish to exact specifications using an excavator, bulldozer, loader, backhoe, road grader, forklift, scraper or trencher close to above and below ground facilities and equipment such as structures, utility lines, culverts, irrigation equipment, fences and pavement based on engineering drawings as appropriate. Perform daily preventative maintenance and make repairs and adjustments to equipment and attachments. This includes, but is not limited to, replacing chains and belts, cables, lubrication, oil and filter changes, battery checks, and safety inspections. Perform routine building and facility maintenance and repairs requiring a knowledge of and skill in such trades as electrical, welding, carpentry, and plumbing, and ability to read blueprints.

  • Driver’s License: Selectee required to possess and maintain a valid State driver's license at all times during their tenure.
  • Duties of this position require the employee to obtain and maintain a valid Class A State Commercial Driver's License (CDL) to operate various vehicles and equipment.
  • Uniform: Official U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service uniform required.
  • Probationary Period: Selectees may be required to successfully complete a probationary period.

Qualifications

By the closing date of this announcement, you must meet the requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Handbook X118C, Job Qualification System for Trades and Labor Occupation. http://www.opm.gov/qualifications/x-118c/ Although no specific amount of experience, education or training is required, applicants must meet a minimum level of ability in relation to the position and the Assessment Questionnaire in order to be rated qualified for consideration. To be qualified candidates must meet any screen out element(s) listed at an "acceptable" level, and must achieve an average rating of at least "acceptable" on all of the elements. Only education, training, or experience acquired before the closing date will be considered. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements. The screen out element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF AN ENGINEERING EQUIPMENT OPERATOR WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION Skill in operating heavy equipment Ability to perform agricultural and construction tasks Knowledge of various terrain/conditions; understands grade levels and able to install pipes/structures at specified elevations Skill in performing daily preventative maintenance, repairs and adjustments to equipment and attachments Skill in keeping written maintenance and purchase records for all equipment operated Knowledge and ability to use computers in order to input maintenance data into the Service database Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
