The Iowa City VA Health Care System (ICVAHCS) is currently recruiting for one (1) Full-Time Registered Nurse- Safe Patient Handling and Mobility Program Manager position. The Safe Patient Handling and Mobility Program Manager falls under the clinical pathway, as a direct care nurse, and reports to the Learning Manager, Education Service Line.

Duties

The VA Midwest Health Care Network advocates for a Whole Health System of care in each of the Medical Centers. VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package: VA Nurse Total Rewards The Safe Patient Handling and Mobility Program Manager will identify educational needs of employees and provide feedback and goals for improvement and take action to accomplish education within a 24/7 facility. The Safe Patient Handling and Mobility Program Manager must be poised and articulate in communicating with people of varied educational levels and varied ethnic backgrounds. The Safe Patient Handling and Mobility Program Manager will implement the program at the facility level and provide feedback to the nurse manager/supervisor on performance of other participants in peer reviews as requested. The Safe Patient Handling and Mobility Program Manager will work collaboratively with all Educators in the Education Department and staff in all clinical areas. They will share knowledge and skills willingly with others. The Safe Patient Handling and Mobility Program Manager will support clinical staff and nursing students in learning basic safe patient handling procedures and facilitate training to encompass change in practice or equipment. They will participate in qualify improvement activities and use results to modify practice in collaboration with department staff and leaders. The Safe Patient Handling and Mobility Program Manager will evaluate practice to ensure care is effectively and efficiently provided and will ensure patient safety is prioritized. The Safe Patient Handling and Mobility Program Manager will take responsibility for own practice and will maintain privacy/confidentiality for employees and patients. The Safe Patient Handling and Mobility Program Manager will ensure all new nurse employees receive initial safe patient handling training during new nurse orientation (NNO). The Safe Patient Handling and Mobility Program Manager will ensure compliance and continuing education on safe patient handling throughout the facility during EOC rounds. Will participate in the Accident Review Board to include the conduct of safe patient handling (SPH) event reviews to determine root cause and recommend additional individual training or SPH program adjustments to prevent similar events in the future. Will lead the Unit Peer Leader program to assist in the identification and training of safe patient handling champions within our organization. The Safe Patient Handling and Mobility Program Manager will serve as the organization subject matter expert in safe patient handling and assist the organization in identifying safe patient handling equipment and tools to further support a safe patient experience. They will monitor and assist the facility in maintaining sufficient equipment supplies within each unit and the hospital. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The approving official may authorize a waiver of the requirement for ACEN or CCNE accreditation of any degree in nursing provided the college or university has regional accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the Department of Education at the time of the candidate's graduation and the composite qualifications of the applicant warrant such consideration. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Preferred Experience: Experience with managing training programs, to include establishing, conducting and tracking initial and annual refresher trainings, identifying and addressing gaps in training, and integrating improvements and policy changes into training. Strong organizational and planning skills. Knowledge of VA, VHA and JC guidelines, handbooks, policies, and procedures related to the Safe Patient Handling & Mobility program. Ability to be a role model for quality customer service and conflict resolution. Strong classroom facilitation, verbal presentation and communication skills. Knowledge of CPRS, TMS, MS Word and Excel or comparable word processing and data analysis software. Served as Safe Patient Handling Coordinator, Unit Peer Leader in Safe Patient Handling and/or Nurse Educator. Exposure and experience with SPH equipment. Procurement experience. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience. Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required. Physical Requirements: The population of male and female veterans served ranges from the adult, age 18, to the elderly adult, age 65 and over. ICVAHCS is a major interdisciplinary teaching facility, serving medical, surgical, and neurological inpatients and outpatients. There is a large outpatient psychiatric population, with visits to the Emergency Department and admissions for medical co-morbidities. This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires up to the entire shift of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Incumbent is required to lift up to 45 pounds, as transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. This position potentially requires flexibility in schedule and assignments, as this is a 24/7 hospital. Must complete annual Employee Health requirements as a condition of employment. The incumbent who provides care in home settings or other off-site locations may be required to drive and/or ride in GSA-vehicle.
