This position is located in the Laboratory of Molecular Microbiology (LMM), Division of Intramural Research (DIR), National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).
Duties
If selected for the position, you will perform the following duties:
Maintain state-of-the-art knowledge of the particular area of research throughout the life of the project, reviewing available literature on new methods and techniques for potential application within the laboratory.
Assume responsibility for the planning, development, implementation, and management of all experiments and experimental protocols. Makes decisions as to the time and resources required to perform the experiments and establishes plans and schedules.
Develop methods for and collect, analyze, organize and records experimental data in a form suitable for publication and future reference by others.
Carry out a variety of sophisticated methods for analyses of data, applying standard statistical methods such as dispersion, analysis of variance, and regression and correlation analysis.
Serve as principal investigator on some projects and ultimately as author on manuscripts reporting the results of these projects.
Assist the senior investigator in managing the laboratory budget and in ordering necessary supplies and equipment. Participates in planning for future equipment and personnel needs as required for new experimental designs and protocols as indicated by the direction of the research.
Assist the senior investigator in meeting all requirements for the safe and efficient direction of the laboratory and its personnel, including ensuring that all safety procedures relevant to the research projects are applied, including the safe handling of animals, hazardous chemicals and radioisotopes.

Qualifications
You qualify at the GS-12 level, if you meet one of the following qualification requirements:
A. completed the requirements for a bachelor's (or graduate) degree in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this position, from an accredited college or university; OR
B. a combination of experience and education which includes courses comparable to a major in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry or related disciplines appropriate to this position, AND appropriate experience or additional education which demonstrates similarly appropriate skills or abilities needed to perform the duties of this position.
Additionally, in order to qualify at the GS-12 level, you must have:
1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: analyzing and comparing experimental data to ensure research objectives are met; analyzing research data by using statistical methods such as dispersion, planning, and implementing scientific experiments and experimental protocols; analyzing and comparing experimental data to ensure research objectives are met; analyzing research data by using statistical methods such as dispersion, analysis of variance, regression and correlation analysis; writing reports, analytical interpretations conclusions, or recommendations, typically for scientific publication; and overseeing the organization and maintenance of a research laboratory, including operating sophisticated laboratory instruments to conduct tests and analyses.
