To provide technical support of manufacturing systems, manufacturing technologies, and machine tools used in the production of complex mechanical parts, instruments and measurement devices and in the NIST Fabrication Techonlogy Office (FTO).
Duties
Performs repetitive and routine technical support tasks under technical supervision, operates equipment, instruments, and
software in addition to carrying out simple procedures and computations. Employee uses specific and detailed guidelines to work
within the framework of established NIST Safety regulations and procedures and refers problems to supervisor. Provides technical
support for manufacturing systems, manufacturing technologies, and machine tools used in the production of mechanical parts,
instruments, and measurement devices. This position has an emphasis in manufacturing and the machinist trade in the provision of
nonprofessional engineering support to research groups, engineers and metrology experts through the design, fabrication and
machining of complex geometric mechanical parts and assemblies, the operation of complex manufacturing equipment and machine
tools, and the planning and selection of appropriate manufacturing processes, setups, materials, tools and equipment.

Qualifications
To qualify at the ZT-III Level: Applicants must have at least one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to a GS-08 grade level (ZT-II for NIST employees) in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience in operating Orbital, Vacuum, and other welding equipment. Knowledge and experience in welding dissimilar metals.Operating Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) Abrasive water jet machinery. Experience using CAD/CAMsoftware and/or Mastercam software to create CNC programs from mechanical drawings of parts to be run on CNC machine tools or assembled via welding.
OR
Two full years of graduate education in a directly related field.
OR
Master's degree in a directly related field.
OR
A combination of education in a directly related field and specialized experience.
To qualify at the ZT-IV Level: Applicants must have one year (52 Weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to a GS-10 grade level (ZT-III for NIST employees) in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience operating Orbital, Vacuum, and other welding equipment. Knowledge and experience in welding dissimilar metals. Operating Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) Abrasive water jet machinery. Experience using CAD/CAM software and/or Mastercam software to create CNC programs from mechanical drawings of parts to be run on CNC machine tools or assembled via welding. Knowledge of basic metrology principles and principles of machining techniques to apply to developing new measurement instruments, programming, and machining/welding complex geometric parts.
