This position is with the Hard Winter Wheat Genetics Research Unit of the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) in Manhattan, KS.
This internship provides an introduction to plant biology, genetics, and research methods and procedures related to crop improvement through conventional breeding integrating DNA technologies. You will contribute directly to the Agency's mission to feed the world.
Duties
Assists in plot preparation and maintenance, plant harvesting and sample preparation and maintenance, as well as sample and seed sorting, or processing for analysis and storage;
Prepares routine media, and solutions, by weighing and measuring constituents according to established methods;
Uses common laboratory equipment and apparatus such as autoclaves, sterilizers, centrifuges and homogenizers to analyze samples.
Requirements
- You must be a US Citizen or US National
- Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt
- Must be in good academic standing as defined by the agency as {define what has been established}
- Complete at least 640 hrs of work experience prior to completion of degree
- Enrolled at least half-time at a qualifying educational institution
- A signed participant agreement is required for employment under Pathways
- Satisfactory Background investigation and/or fingerprint check
- Successful completion of two-year trial period

Qualifications
Pathways Eligibility Requirements:
All applicants must be currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a student on at least a half-time basis at a qualifying educational institution in a certificate, degree, or diploma program. Must be in good academic standing as defined by the institution they are attending. Must meet the definition of a student throughout the duration of their internship appointment.
The qualifications for each grade level are as follows:
GS-2: Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
GS-3: Education: Completion of 1 academic year of post-high school study.
GS-4: Education: Completion of 2 academic years of post-high school study or associate's degree
Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Transcripts or proof of enrollment are required to be considered eligible.
