Duties

This is a position for new graduates and all RN with less than 12 months experience and the Final offer will not be issued until RN license is attained. If unable to secure a position of your choice before the 12, month mark, you will be placed in an open position as determined by Nursing Leadership. The new graduate registered nurse (RN) interprets the philosophy and goals of nursing service to others in the work setting; functions within established guidelines and demonstrates the ability to work effectively and develop therapeutic relationships with patients, their families, and other professional and supportive personnel who provide patient care. The RN delivers fundamental, knowledge-based care to assigned patients while developing technical competencies. The RN works closely with a preceptor with a goal of developing skills and judgement to utilize the nursing process in real situations. The focus is on individual growth and development in practice with increased levels of self-direction. The RN in the transition to practice residency program will be enrolled into a 12 -month program that includes hands-on clinical training, classroom training, simulation training, preceptorship, mentorship, and shadowing experiences. The RN is required to attend trainings and learning experiences to successfully complete the program, to facilitate completion additional assignments or alternate experiences may be required. The Transition to Practice RN is expected to demonstrate proficiency in practice based on conscious, deliberate planning. Self -directed in goal setting for managing complex patient situations (VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G6). registered nurse is a competent nurse who demonstrates competence in practice and decision-making, deliberate planning, and critical thinking skills. This nurse integrates knowledge, skills, abilities, and judgment and is self-directed in goal setting for managing complex situations. The focus is beyond the self to the evolution of systems thinking by synthesizing knowledge to solve problems that result in demonstrated outcomes. This nurse demonstrates the ability to cope with and manage competing priorities. The competent nurse evaluates others, coaches and mentor's others, and demonstrates leadership skills through collaborative efforts. Functions and Responsibility but not limited to. Delivers safe, basic care to assigned patients with simple needs while developing technical competencies. Adheres to VA Central Ohio Healthcare System policies and procedures. Updates assessments by recognizing changes in patient's needs and re-establishes priorities for care with assistance. Develops initial nursing care plan, including the patient/family/significant others and other health care providers in establishing realistic goals related to health education and the treatment plan. Implements nursing orders in a timely and accurate manner. Implements appropriate physician's orders in timely and accurate manner; reporting when unable to do so. Identifies basic health teaching based on identified needs, including preparation for procedures, tests, and discharge. Assesses the patient's response to treatment plan, revising the care plan and discussing with the provider as necessary. Assesses and treats pain utilizing the pain management protocol. Documents assessments, actions, and responses to treatment and other significant information in a timely and accurate manner utilizing the electronic health record. Provides care appropriate to adult, older adult, and geriatric patients with respect to age - related changes in skin, bones, hearing, vision, thermoregulation, cognition, communication, balance and ambulation, and related considerations. Demonstrates the ability to assess data reflective of patient's status and care requirements for population-specific needs, such as, culture, veteran era, etc., and plans and delivers care appropriately. Initiates basic emergency interventions as necessary. Initiates appropriate interventions for patients exhibiting disruptive behavior. The RN will adhere to all current directives of VHA, and meet current Joint Commission standards, and VA-OIG expectations. The RN will intentionally create opportunities to leverage virtual care technology to support the mission of the facility and VA at large. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 7:30 am-4:00 pm. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 12/07/2023. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant. [NOTE: See exception in subparagraph (b) below for candidates who are enrolled in a MSN Bridge Program.] The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), previously known as the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) OR The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. In these programs, students are given a certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX and should submit this certification to VA prior to appointment. Students do not earn a BSN, but receive a MSN degree upon completion of course work. A copy of the MSN transcript must be provided to VA. Bridge programs that confer a master's degree also fully meet the education requirement, even though a Bachelor's Degree is not awarded. OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active, and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Registration: A registered nurse (RN) will have a current, full, active and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the U.S. or in the District of Columbia. The appointing official may waive this registration if the RN is to serve in a country other than the U.S. and the RN has registration in that country (e.g., Philippines). The RN must maintain a current, full, active and unrestricted registration to continue employment with VA. English Language Proficiency: RNs appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d). Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Physical Requirements: This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, and sitting. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing. S/he may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. S/he must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, and able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Applicants must possess the mental and physical ability to satisfactorily perform the duties of the proposed assignment. Physical requirements may involve lifting, carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching above shoulder, walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, and repeated bending. S/he must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as TB screening or testing on hire, as a condition of employment.
