About the Position: Join us at the United States Southern Command. We provide direct support to a four-star unified Combatant Commander, but are compact enough that our staff also works with senior leadership representatives of our inter-service, inter-agency and (public and private) international partner organizations. Our contribution to furthering our country's relationships with South and Central American nations and peoples are substantial.
Duties
Serve as the principal advisor to U.S. Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM) senior leadership on all aviation related matters.
Develop organizational policy and procedures to support all organizational aviation programs.
Execute all airworthiness related programs and coordinates Specialized Air Waivers for flights on foreign military and foreign civilian aircraft.
Ensure USSOUTHCOM interests and requirements status as it relates to DOD rapidly deployable fixed-wing aircraft for intra-theater and inter-theater airlift in support of operational plans, exercises, and contingency operations.
Evaluate progress of ongoing aircraft requests and tasks in order to identify issues and direct any necessary corrective action.
Keep abreast of new/revised policies, procedures, regulations, directives, legislation, etc. as it relates to DOD aircraft and non-DOD foreign aircraft.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Nature of position requires unannounced duty schedule changes as well as lengthened duty days, to include possible weekend work to accommodate civilian/military executive travel departures/arrivals in accordance with mission requirements.
- Selectee must be able to obtain and maintain a Security Clearance of TOP SECRET / Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI).
- Position requires drug testing. Employee must pass screening for illegal drug use prior to appointment and subsequent periodic drug screening thereafter.
- Percentage of time to be spent on Temporary Duty (TDY) travel is 5%.
- This position is an obligated position to which former incumbent has statutory reemployment rights under 10 USC 1586.
- This is a term NTE 13 months position. Term positions may be extended NTE 6 years. Option to convert to permanent without further competition.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes coordinating aviation programs and/or projects involving military and non-military air travel in support of routine and contingency operations and exercises; utilizing databases for cost estimation and performance of travel; developing guidance to support aviation programs.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12).
