About the Position: Join us at the United States Southern Command. We provide direct support to a four-star unified Combatant Commander, but are compact enough that our staff also works with senior leadership representatives of our inter-service, inter-agency and (public and private) international partner organizations. Our contribution to furthering our country's relationships with Caribbean, South and Central American nations and peoples are substantial.

Duties

Serve as member of a joint force team in concert with other services, US government agencies, US embassies, and participating nation (PN) country teams throughout the Caribbean and Central and South America. Originate and direct the planning, development and analysis of Counterdrug (CD) operations. Analyze a wide variety of data and provide authoritative recommendations throughout the planning and execution stages of counter drug (CD) operations. Exercise a high degree of initiative and judgment in identifying and evaluating problem areas, to analyze and formulate solutions to complex problems. Draft, review and recommend staff actions for the Directorate on matters concerning CD policies and strategies and various threats to Partner Nations in USSOUTHCOM's Area of Responsibility. Interpret and adapt specific guidance for implementation and application throughout the assigned program.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires DoD Security Cooperation Workforce (SCW) Certification. The incumbent must complete certification-related training requirements in the SC Area of Concentration (AoC) Intermediate level within 3 years.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Top Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes advising on policies, strategies, planning, development, and analysis of Counterdrug (CD) operations for government agencies, embassies, partner nation country teams and other services on a national and international level; making recommendations for improvements to CD operational plans and orders in accordance with applicable joint operation planning guidance; preparing responses to questions concerning CD operations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Integration, Outreach & CollaborationInternational Engagement Action PlanningPartnering Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11).
