About the Position: This position is in a hospital-office environment, which is adequately lighted, ventilated, and climate controlled, performing a variety of leader, receptionist, clerical, administrative, and record keeping duties associated with patient care and treatment in a Military Treatment Facility (MTF). Duties
Lead 3 or more employees who provide clerical support for the department.
Distribute and balance the workload among employees in accordance with established work flow or job specialization.
Monitor the status and progress of staff workloads and makes day-to-day adjustments in accordance with established priorities.
Receive and review all incoming correspondence from hospitals, attorneys, Social Security Administration, private physicians, insurance companies, individual requests, and others including subpoenas and medical statements regarding medical records.
Research and extract pertinent information from hospital inpatient and outpatient records to answer medical record inquiries.
Compose correspondence and abstract medical reports/records in response to difficult/sensitive requests from areas including insurance companies, civilian hospitals and attorneys with highly sensitive matters and short suspense dates.
Requirements
- A qualified typist is required.
- Employees assigned to this position may be designated as Mission Essential and assume Essential Personnel status during inclement weather/emergencies.
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 2 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations. Applicants tentatively selected for appointment to this position will be required to sign a statement .

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: explaining medical terminology to patients and families; utilizing office software (such as Word, Excel, and Power Point) to create and manipulate documents/spreadsheets; composing legal correspondence for medical request; and processing legal inquiries regarding patient medical records. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
Proficiency Required:This position requires a qualified typist. A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors.
