About the Position: This is a PERMANENT Maintenance Worker position with the Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobility and Security (DPTMS) located at Fort Jackson, SC.
Duties
Perform a variety of maintenance tasks in support of multiple live fire ranges and training facilities.
Fabricate range and training support devices such as barricades, firing point, and target identification stakes and signs, target frames, target panels, moving target tracks, and other training devices not characterized as training aids.
Install rafters, studs, sills, plates, braces, joists, floors, subfloors, panels (including sheetrock and plywood), siding, sheathing, roofing, building paper, insulating materials, door and window frames and interior and exterior trim.
Perform routine maintenance on stationary infantry targets (SITs) and Stationary Armor Targets (SATS), as well as other target variations utilized on ranges.
Repair wooden and metal structures such as warehouses, storage sheds, range target houses, control towers, latrine buildings, maintenance sheds, and other related range support facilities.
Paint sheds, flag poles, rubbish cans, ammunition tables, signs, barricades, land markers, range markers and other similar structures and items used on ranges where a fine finish is not required.
Operate tractors, mowers, weed trimmers and other driven or hand operated machinery to maintain a safe, professional appearance and operational use of ranges and training facilities.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Incumbent must be able to pass a full background investigation.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter.
- This position is a designated drug testing position and is subject to a pre-employment drug test screening, and random testing thereafter.
- Incumbent is required to work a rotating shift in order to support military training requirements which may occur 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 45lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- This position may have a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Maintenance Worker without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common Maintenance Worker duties such as fabricating range and training support devices to include barricades, firing point, target identification stakes/signs; target frames/panels and moving target tracks; conduct functionality test and preventative maintenance on targetry mechanisms. I am skilled in repairing and/or replacing wooden, plastic and cardboard targets. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Physical Efforts: Makes repairs and installations from ladders and in trenches, and where parts of the systems worked on are in hard-to-reach places. Stands, stoops, bends, kneels, climbs and works in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries and sets up tools, equipment and parts that weigh up to 45 pounds, and occasionally items that weigh up to 100 pounds. Is usually assisted when carrying heavier equipment for long distances. Work requires climbing up and down a steep flight of stairs to reach the 45 foot control tower to perform maintenance.
Working Conditions: Works primarily outside, in dirt, dust and mud. Is sometimes required to make repairs and installations outside in windy or cold weather. Is required to wear and/or use protective clothing and equipment in accordance with established health and safety regulations and SOP's. Exposed to dangers of live fire ranges, pyrotechnics, laser frequencies and explosives. May be exposed to sulfuric acid when handling batteries used in operating remote controlled target devices. Is exposed to the possibility of abrasions, cuts, burns, and electrical shock. Exposed to high temperature outdoor climate with high humidity during summer months.
