This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel within the DoD to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: As survey technician operates all electronic survey equipment, to include recording data, evaluating the data and reports to the party chief concerning the results.

Duties

Serve as instrument person and team member in a survey field crew obtaining geodetic, hydrographic, topographic, and survey control data. Use equipment such as computers, GPS (Global Positioning System) receivers, total stations, and digital levels. Complete notes, plot sketches, and drawings locating various hydrographic and topographic features. Assist office staff in various tasks to include, survey data processing, planning future field surveys, etc. Complete data files, field books, daily log sheets, and other items to be used by office staff or processing collected data.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a USACE Class A1 boat operator's license for operating motorboats up to 26 feet in length within twelve months of appointment.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Requires lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Mandatory completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter.
  • Mandatory participation in the Army and USACE Drug Testing Program IAW AR 600-85 and USACE Pamphlet No. 600-1-3.
  • This position involves working in outdoor conditions often in remote sites that are subject to inclement weather such as severe rain and cold.
  • This position requires working a fixed work schedule of Monday through Thursday, 10-hour days, 4 days a week.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of up to 50% of the time.
  • One-year probationary period may be required.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Experience and/or Education needed for the GS-06 Level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Working on a survey team, AND 2) Using survey equipment such as Global Positioning Systems (GPS), Real Time Kinematic Systems (RTK) and/or servicing other survey equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). OR Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as surveying, engineering, construction, or industrial technology. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages. Experience and/or Education needed for the GS-07 Level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Obtaining geodetic, hydrographic, topographic, and survey control data, AND 2) Operating, maintaining, and servicing a variety of measuring instruments, AND 3) Leading a team of individuals. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). OR Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as surveying, engineering, construction, or industrial technology. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages. Qualification requirement: Qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
