The position is within the Animal Plant and Health Inspection Service (APHIS), in the National Feral Swine Damage Management Program and is to reduce damage and risk to agriculture, natural resources, property, animal health, and human health and safety in the United States by reducing or eliminating feral swine populations, in cooperation with states, tribes, other federal agencies, organizations, and others.

Duties

The duties described are for the full-performance level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity. The duties may include, but are not limited to: Be familiar with and know how to use laboratory equipment, capture devices, chemicals, tools, and related equipment utilized in wildlife management and disease monitoring. Familiar with and comfortable working in Biosafety level 2 laboratories. Assist with demonstrations and training for Wildlife Services employees, cooperators or other interested groups. Process incoming samples. Conduct data entry and management. Work with large data sets and checking entries to ensure results correctly match with animal identification numbers. Provide general support for GIS functions. Participate in field activities such as sample collection, processing, shipping, and data collection when requested for assistance. Perform diagnostic tests for various diseases.

  • The work sometimes requires moderately strenuous physical exertion. Incumbent must be able to lift moderate weights.
  • May need to operate 4-wheel drive vehicles over rough terrain and other off-road environments.
  • Physical exertion includes walking over wet, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces, bending, crouching and stooping, stretching, or similar activities.
  • Will often work with biological specimens that may contain pathogens, and hazardous chemicals.
  • Legal and physical ability to possess and discharge firearms appropriately and safely is required.
  • Incumbents must be able to comply with both Federal and State statutory requirements to possess and use firearms in the performance of their duties and must maintain state-mandated firearm use certification requirements.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below. FOR THE GS-06 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 level) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates: Experience in wildlife disease surveillance projects. Experience conducting scientific literature reviews, as well as collecting and reviewing detail-oriented scientific data, as part of wildlife disease surveillance studies, which may include captive animal and field work. Experience with at least two of the following: trapping, chemical immobilization, collecting and shipping biological samples, maintaining and organizing data, and writing scientific reports, as part of a wildlife disease surveillance project. OR One full year of graduate level education with an emphasis on wildlife management. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the one year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for this grade level. TRANSCRIPTS are required if: You are qualifying for the position based on education. You are qualifying for this position based on a combination of experience and education. This education must have been successfully completed and obtained from an accredited school, college, or university. COMBINATION OF EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE AT THE GS-06 GRADE LEVEL: Applicants may have combinations of successfully completed education and specialized experience to meet total qualification requirements. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify for that grade level. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
