This position is located in the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Field Organization, Plains Area (PA), Center for Agricultural Resources Research located in Fort Collins, CO. In this position you will perform a wide variety of plant gene banking tasks including processing incoming and outgoing samples, data quality reviews, customer/site interactions, data entry, and report generation.

Duties

Performs techniques and studies using a variety of specialized equipment. Uses equipment and automated systems for test and evaluation procedures. Collects and verifies samples and supporting records. Maintains records and locates and compiles data and other information from various sources. Maintains inventory of chemicals, stock solutions, etc., prepares solutions and reagents for use in the laboratory, field, or greenhouse, and safely disposes of waste material (both chemical and biological). Participates in Quality Assurance/Control (QA/QC) for new and existing data. Maintains documentation of Agricultural Genetic Resources Preservation Research Unit (AGRPRU) procedures. Assists in the reviewing of requests, generating packing slips, picking lists, monitoring inventory deductions, and coordinating shipments with local staff and NPGS active sites.

The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-7 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-6 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in research related to seeds, plants, or plant parts in a laboratory environment; maintaining or operating scientific equipment; and recording data and results related to plant research. OR Education: Successful completion of one full year of graduate level education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related to the position. Related degrees may include: Biology, Microbiology, Plant Pathology, Crop Sciences or other degrees provided that the coursework places an emphasis on crop related sciences. OR A combination of education and specialized experience as described above. GS-08: Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-8 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-7 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in research related to plant microbe genetics or crops in a laboratory environment; using equipment or automated systems for evaluation procedures; and recording and analyzing data or results related to plant genetics research. OR Education: Successful completion of two full years of graduate level education or a Master's degree, if directly related to the position. Related degrees may include: Biology, Microbiology, Plant Pathology, Crop Sciences or other similar degrees provided that the coursework places and emphasis on crop related sciences. OR A combination of education and specialized experience as described above. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
