The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in the Office of the Inspector General (OIG), created to detect and prevent fraud, waste, and abuse; to promote economy and efficiency; and to keep the head of the Smithsonian and Congress fully and currently informed of problems at the Smithsonian.
Duties
The Criminal Investigator is responsible for supporting and assisting in the planning, coordinating, directing, and conducting of investigations relating to Smithsonian Institution programs.

Qualifications
Experience: GS-11: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as 1) conducting criminal investigations into fraud or integrity-related offenses; 2) conducting interviews and interrogations; 3) writing investigative reports; and 4) collecting evidence admissible in court.

3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree
OR
Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree

GS-12: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as 1) conducting criminal investigations into fraud or other financial or integrity-related offenses; 2) conducting interviews and interrogations; 3) writing investigative reports; 4) collecting evidence admissible in court; 5) drafting and serving arrest and search warrants; and 6) testifying in court or administrative hearings.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.
You must also meet the following special requirements:You must pass a medical examination prior to being appointed. This position requires moderate to arduous physical exertion involving walking and standing, use of firearms, and exposure to inclement weather. Manual dexterity with free motion of fingers, wrists, elbows, shoulders, hips, and knee joints is required. Arms, hands, legs, and feet must function sufficiently in order for applicants to perform the duties satisfactorily.Vision: Sufficiently good vision in each eye, with or without correction. Hearing: Hearing loss, as measured by an audiometer, must not exceed 35 decibels at 1000, 2000, and 3000 Hz levels.Other Medical Requirements: You must possess emotional and mental stability. Any condition that would hinder full, efficient performance of the duties of this position or that would cause an individual to be a hazard to himself/herself or to others is disqualifying.All of the medical requirements MUST be met at the time of initial examination/test. Applicants failing to meet the medical requirements at the time of their initial examination/test will be considered ineligible for the position.
Additional Requirements: Applicant must have successfully completed basic law enforcement training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Academy (FLETC) or equivalent training at a state or local law enforcement training academy. You must provide proof of successful completion of such basic law enforcement training with your application.
Applicant must be able to qualify semi-annually with a 9mm semi-automatic pistol and meet the requirements to be sworn in as a Special Deputy U.S. Marshal.
Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid state motor vehicle operator's license on appointment.
