About the Position: Serves as a technical specialist and lead geologist responsible for the leadership, development, and guidance of personnel engaged in investigations and remedial designs of Hazardous, Toxic and Radioactive Waste (HTRW) sites. Controls, organizes, and manages resources to complete studies, reports, remedial designs, and construction contract plans and specifications.

Duties

The incumbent is the technical authority and expert for any and all geology- and hydrogeology-related work for HTRW investigations and remedial designs. Serves as a technical specialist and lead geologist responsible for the leadership, development, and guidance of personnel engaged in investigations and remedial designs of Hazardous, Toxic and Radioactive Waste (HTRW) sites. Manages resources to complete in-house and Architect-Engineer (A-E) contracted studies, reports, remedial designs, and construction contract plans and specifications. Articulates and communicates work assignments, problems to be solved, actions to be taken, milestones to be met, program issues to be resolved and schedules for completion of project elements. Coaches the team in selecting and applying appropriate tools, techniques, and methods for solving project-related problems; provides advice on work methods, practices, and procedures; and assists the team in identifying viable solutions to problems.

Basic Requirement for Lead Geologist: A: Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography. OR B: Combination of education and experience: course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Leading a team professionals to ensure effective execution of geological management tasks and work products. 2) Developing strategies to use new technology to enhance productivity, quality of business decisions and to assess the impact of these technological changes within the organization; 3) Understanding to preparation of the geology portion survey reports, design memoranda and plans and specifications.4) Providing geologic advice and data to the various elements of the District regarding foundation conditions during all phases of planning, design. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: GeologyLeadershipTechnical Competence Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-12).
