The Supervisor, Inpatient Respiratory Care will carry out their duties in accordance with guidelines established by the NBRC, AARC and the policies and procedures of the Southern Arizona VHA. The Supervisor, Inpatient Respiratory Care should plan implement and evaluate the effectiveness of the Inpatient Respiratory Care work unit and make changes needed to improve overall effectiveness.

Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to: Assessment: Assess work requirements and workload for each of the areas under their immediate supervision. Provides reports on staff productivity to the Medical Director. Reviews and assess section policies and procedures with the latest ATS/ERS standards. Assesses the quality of data input by staff for arterial blood gasses and implements corrective actions when needed. Planning: The inpatient respiratory care program manager will regularly monitor the staff performance. The Supervisor, inpatient Respiratory Care program must be competent in pulmonary function testing, arterial blood gasses and in assisting bronchoscopy including EBUS. The Supervisor, Inpatient Respiratory Care Program is considered a working supervisor and ensures cohesiveness and continuity of leadership. The working supervisor will provide additional staffing coverage for inpatient care areas and specialty care areas if needed. Implementation: Assures implementation of hospital and Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine Section policies, procedures, and standards of care. Assists with the development and maintains appropriateness of policy and procedure manuals of the outpatient respiratory care. Assist with assessing adequate supplies are on hand by conducting inventories & either ordering or notify Medical Director. Ability to recommend improvements based on evaluation of facility operations. Administrative /Supervisory Duties: Ability to supervise employees. Make recommendation for advancement, recognition for performance and remedial or disciplinary action. Formulates plans and arranges for appropriate training courses for outpatient respiratory care staff members with new treatment procedures or operation of new types of medical equipment. Resolves technical work problems, including those not covered by precedents or established policies. Research: Assists in or participates in approved research activities involving the Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Section. Education: Maintains current clinical skill and credentialing through in-service programs, continuing education to include evidence of a certificate as an RRT and an RPFT from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) and a registry number, or certificate from another body which the NBRC recognizes as its credentialing equivalent to perform as a respiratory therapist and professional publications. Assists in providing learning experiences for respiratory therapy students and allied health professionals and provide instruction where indicted. This includes conducting student orientation and administration of competency testing. Conducts in-service training to physicians, nurses, respiratory students, and respiratory personnel as assigned. Completes required TMS modules. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. work schedule, but work schedule may be adjusted to meet the needs of the service. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education. Individuals must have successfully completed a respiratory care program accredited by the CoARC or its successor. Licensure. Persons appointed or reassigned to RRT positions in the GS-0601 series must possess and maintain for the duration of employment a full, current and unrestricted license from a state to practice as an RRT. Credential. Persons appointed or reassigned to RRT positions in the GS-0601 series must possess and maintain for the duration of employment a valid, current, unrestricted credential of RRT. English Language Proficiency. RTs/RRTs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Preferred Experience: Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist (RPFT). Faculty involvement at an accredited Respiratory Care School Grade Determinations:GS-13 Experience, Licensure and Credential. Candidates must have: One year of creditable experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level demonstrating the clinical competencies described at that level. Hold an active license and RRT credential. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities. In addition to the requirements above, candidates must demonstrate all the following KSAs: Ability to plan and assist in the establishment of a completely integrated respiratory care program. Ability to recommend improvements based on evaluation of facility operations. Ability to supervise employees. Ability to manage the fiscal aspects of the functions supervised. Physical Requirements: Heavy Lifting (45 lbs. and over); Moderate Carrying (15-44 lbs); Pushing; Straight pulling; Pulling hand over hand; Reaching above shoulder; Use of fingers; Both hands required; Walking (up to 6 hours); Standing (up to 6 hours); Kneeling (Intermittent); Repeated bending (up to 6 hours); Both legs required; Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; Near vision correctable at 13" to 16"; Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 an to 20/40 in the other; Ability to distinguish shades of colors; Hearing (aid permitted); Emotional and Mental Stability.
