This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Mid Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6), Hampton VA Medical Center (VAMC), in the Center for Development & Civic Engagement (CDCE). The primary purpose of this position is to perform patient escort services through the facility.
Duties
Duties include:
Duties include the escort of non-critical ill patients; the pickup and delivery of items such as specimens and clinical reports; and messenger service within the Medical Center.
Transports patients by wheelchair, stretcher, or bed to and from nursing units, clinical laboratories, and other related clinical areas.
Transports non-critically ill patients throughout the VAMC, which includes multiple separate buildings.
Maintaining effective interpersonal relationship with patients, significant others and co-workers directed toward patient care.
Ensures that Escort Service's assigned wheelchairs and stretchers are returned to the Escort area for proper utilization and accountability purposes.
Provides for environmental, patient, and personal safety by using proper body mechanics, safety devices and techniques, and reporting unsafe conditions.
Takes corrective action during simple potentially hazardous situations, i.e., removing objects blocking emergency exists. Reports any observed emergencies to the appropriate personnel.
Reports any observed changes in the physical appearance and/or character of the patient during transport to the appropriate medical personnel. Documents completion of escort tasks.
Provides backup duties which may include filing, answering telephone, and receptionist activities as needed for the Escort Department.
Following and observing all HIPAA regulations and requirements.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 11/16/2023.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS- 02 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-01. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have 3 months of general experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-1 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of general experience would typically include, but are not limited to: general office clerical work in a healthcare environment, assisting or transporting patients in a medical environment, acting as a messenger or delivery person in a medical environment.

Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have a High School Diploma or the appropriate equivalent.???????

Physical Requirements: Work includes walking, standing, lifting, pushing, stooping, reaching, sitting, bending. Practice of proper body mechanics. Work is performed within the VAMC environment with adherence to safety regulations and precautions. Possible exposure to contagious disease. Possible exposure to resistive or assaultive patients.
