You will serve as a TOOLMAKER in the MECHANICAL SHOP, PRODUCTION RESOURCES DEPARTMENT of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will set up and operate all conventional machine tools and attachments. You will apply the principles and methods of the Toolmaking trade to layout, select tools, grinding wheels speeds and feeds, and machining operations. You will design, repair or manufacture jigs, fixtures, simple or progressive dies, hobs, drills, reamers and various other tooling devices. You will perform bench work such as filing, scraping, grinding, and lapping to finish and assemble items. You will repair micrometers, Vernier calipers, height gages, flat contour gages, threaded work plug-set plug-ring gages, torque wrenches, dial indicators, local laboratory standards, and optical comparators.

Requirements

  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.

  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION Ability working to tolerances of one tenth of one thousandths of an inch and sometimes as small as ten millionths on calibration work; Ability to setting up and operation of specialized and precision machines such as jig grinders, internal and external thread grinders that are common to the trade; Ability utilizing a wide variety of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, plastic, rubber and other materials; Ability to using micrometers, Vernier's, height gages, surface gages, dial indicators, comparators, etc.; Ability to reading and interpreting blueprints, sketches, NPEA's, PEM's and other technical specifications; Ability to applying advanced shop mathematics and formulas to determine dimensions and geometries.
