The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a Recreation Assistant assisting the Fitness Director and Facility Manager performing duties as required to support the mission of the 88th Services Division, Fitness Program.
Duties
Performs as a personal trainer and instructs both scheduled and nonscheduled aerobics classes as directed by the Facility Manager. Based on the availability of training funds, Fitness Fundamentals and a basic certification in a group exercise technique should be obtained within the first six months.
Assures cleanliness of gymnasium facilities such as courts, cardio and weight room equipment, restrooms, and locker rooms. Checks equipment to ensure all are in proper working condition. Makes repairs to fitness equipment, not limited to minor repair but also includes performance of periodic maintenance and specialized repairs for which the employee has been trained. All repairs will be done in coordination with and approval of the Facility Manager. Identifies parts requirements to make needed repairs and coordinates with the Facility Manager.
Ensures proper patron eligibility and safety rules and policies are observed. Assists Facility Manager in the performance of special events or programs as directed.
Operates an electronic cash register. Accepts cash payments for fees and charges and assures the cash is properly entered into the register and makes correct change. Complies daily transactions and submits a cashier report to the Facility Manager. Prepares and makes bank deposits. Inventories and prepares supplies in support of resale operations.
Participates in required in-service training and maintains currency, capability, and certification to perform as a personal trainer, aerobics instructor and to administer first aid, defibrillator rescue and CPR.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT:
Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above)
Examples of qualifying specialized experience include:
Group leader, counselor, or similar work in public and private recreation programs for adults or children such as summer camps, local playgrounds, YWCA and YMCA clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, urban community centers, or resort recreational activities.
Teacher's aid in elementary school recreation or physical education program, with emphasis on development of general recreational skills and abilities.
Aid or assistant assignments in recreation while on active military service.
Aid or assistant in the organization and administration of recreation activities, such as preparing activities calendars, maintaining attendance records, and providing information concerning schedules and activities.
Summer aid in a State or national park, with duties related to the recreational activities of visitors to campsites, trails, picnic areas, nature and raft centers, and boating and fishing areas (e.g., demonstrating camping techniques and park safety, conducting nature tours, and overseeing farm animal areas provided for children).
Sales or stock clerk in a recreation supplies and equipment shop.
Aid or assistant in the issuance of authorized property, and in the maintenance of inventory control and accountability for such property in a recreation facility.
Aid or assistant in a hotel or resort recreation service, with duties such as setting up areas for games, tournaments, and other organized group recreational activities.

Education and Training
For GS-5: Successful completion of a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in courses related to recreation or physical education.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-04, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes I have or will have within 120 days specialized experience at GS-04 level or equivalent in other pay systems. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies, knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position and is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
Knowledge to perform specialized repairs would be obtained through attendance of a manufacturer presented maintenance class. Additionally, the ability to order parts from a manufacturer is only possible after attendance and successful completion of the maintenance class resulting in a certification.
Knowledge to instruct spinning aerobic classes will be obtained through the SV Trainer through enrollment in a spinning certification program.
Good working knowledge of a variety of sports and recreation activities to assist with recreational activities.
Knowledge to assist participants in different physical activities in order to provide a well-balanced program.
Good working knowledge of exercise and fitness equipment to be able to demonstrate the proper use of equipment.
Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training is desirable.
Basic knowledge to develop fitness programs utilizing the resistance equipment will be obtained through attendance of AF Fitness Fundamentals and through interface with and certification of knowledge by a staff Cooper's Certificate Trainer.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
