The primary purpose of this position, RECREATION ASSISTANT, NK-0189-02, is to serve as a recreation assistant to the Fitness Programs Manager, Sports Programs Manager, and Operations Manager in the planning, managing, and administering one of the largest comprehensive year-round installation fitness and sports programs in the U.S. Air Force.

Duties

-Perform equipment orientations and instruct scheduled group exercise classes as directed by the Facility Manager. -Clean gymnasium facilities such as courts, cardio and weight room equipment, rest rooms, and locker rooms. -Operate an electronic cash register.

  • The actual work performed in this position has been reviewed and determined that it does not meet any of the exemption criteria defined in 5 CFR 551. This position has been designated as nonexempt.
  • CPR/AED certification is desirable.
  • Based on availability of training funds, a primary fitness certification approved by the DAF will be obtained within the first six months.
  • The work requires the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver’s license is required for the position.
  • Ability to instruct group exercise classes is desirable.
  • Ability to obtain CPR/AED certification is required within 90 days of hire. Training may be provided.
  • PHYSICAL EFFORT: Due to heavy lifting, extended periods of standing, stooping, and kneeling. A PRE-EMPLOYMENT PHYSICAL IS REQUIRED.
  • WORKING ENVIRONMENT: The program involves risks or discomforts which requires normal safety precautions typical of various sporting events. Work areas are adequately lighted; heated and ventilated.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Technical and Medical Support Positions, to include the Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR) for the GS-0189, Recreation Aid and Assistant Series. ONLY EXPERIENCE OBTAINED BY THE CLOSING DATE OF THIS ANNOUNCEMENT WILL BE CONSIDERED. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience at a level close to the work of this position that has given them the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform. Typically, we would find this experience in work within this field that is closely related. To be creditable, the specialized experience must have been equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-04), pay band or equivalent. Examples of specialize experience include (1) group leader, counselor, or similar work in public and private recreation programs for adults or children such as summer camps, local playgrounds, YWCA and YMCA clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, urban community centers, or resort recreational activities; (2) teacher's aide in elementary school recreation or physical education program, with emphasis on development of general recreational skills and abilities; (3) aide or assistant assignments in recreation while on active military service; (4) aide or assistant in the organization and administration of recreation activities, such as preparing activities calendars, maintaining attendance records, and providing information concerning schedules and activities.Note: In-service applicants can qualify with at least 1 year of specialized experience at either the next lower level (GS-04) or the second lower level (GS-03). However, for outside applicants (i.e., those without current or prior Federal competitive or excepted service), 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower level is required. OR EDUCATION: Successfully completed a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in courses related to recreation or physical education. YOU MUST SUBMIT COPIES OF YOUR UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS WITH YOUR APPLICATION IF USING EDUCATION AS A SUBSTITUTION OF EXPERIENCE. OR COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. NOTE: YOU MUST SUBMIT COPIES OF YOUR UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS WITH YOUR APPLICATION IF USING EDUCATION AS A SUBSTITUTION OF EXPERIENCE. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge and ability to order parts and perform specialized repairs on fitness equipment after attendance and certification of completion of manufacturer presented maintenance class. 2. Knowledge to instruct group exercise classes after certification completion through enrollment in a certification program. 3. Knowledge of a variety of fitness, sports, and recreation activities to assist with the set up and preparation to safely conduct related events. 4. Skills in working with exercise and fitness equipment to demonstrate proper use of equipment. 5. Ability to assist participants in different physical activities in order to provide a well-balanced program. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
