Duties
Prepare and distribute medical supplies and equipment used in all areas of the hospital.
Track sterilization methods and cycles using an automated system in order to monitor expiration dates of stock.
Operate ultrasonic cleaners and/or washer-sterilizers in order to properly clean/sterilize all types of medical instruments.
Produce computer generated pick-tickets and preference cards in order to prepare for a surgical or healthcare procedure.
Prepare individual surgical case carts with required surgical instrumentation for scheduled and emergent operative procedures.
Disassemble and reassemble equipment and complex instrumentation in order to conduct proper decontamination.
Examine items and sets to be cleaned in order to determine completeness, damage or imperfections before use by a medical team.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 40 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- This position requires rotating shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
- This position is subject to screening and update of required immunizations unless exempted for medical or administrative reasons.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
- This position requires Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. To qualify for the GS-05:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes retrieving medical supplies for patient care use OR preparing medical supplies for distribution throughout a medical facility OR sterilizing medical/surgical equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).
OR
Education: Four-year course of study leading to a bachelors degree. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.
To qualify for the GS-06:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes determining the best sterilization method to utilize in the sterilization of medical/surgical supplies or equipment AND utilizing an electronic system to track the sterilization status of medical/surgical supplies or equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
OR
Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position such as microbiology, health care administration, hospital management, biomedical engineering, sanitary science, and engineering. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
