The Housekeeping Aid position is located at the VA Health Care System main facility and Community Based Outpatient Clinics. This position performs both janitorial and custodial services. Work is regularly performed by hand and with light and heavy-powered (industrial type) cleaning equipment.

Duties
The housekeeping aids who maintain VA facilities for Veterans and their families are essential to the patient care experience at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). A VA healthcare career as a housekeeping aid means working alongside other Veterans, who make up 85 percent of the housekeeping staff. As a Housekeeping Aid, you will perform a full range of light and heavy cleaning duties and routine housekeeping duties. Veterans rely on the skills of these professionals to keep patient areas clean and safe by addressing spills quickly, discarding trash, installing light bulbs in halls and rooms, and vacuuming and polishing floors.
Major duties include, but are not limited to:
Use of powered cleaning equipment for proper and efficient accomplishment (e.g.: buffing and polishing machines of rotary, plate and drum design rotary; plate and drum type floor stripping units; tank, canister and upright vacuum cleaners, wet/dry vacuum cleaners, pressure washers, steam cleaners and spray cleaners, high speed and ultra-high speed electric and battery operated burnishers, walk behind and ride on battery operated and electric automatic scrubbers, rotary, extraction and bonnet type carpet shampooing equipment, and other powered equipment).
Perform cleaning of rooms, areas, items of furniture or equipment, or specific architectural features (e.g.: floors, walls, baseboards, windows, metal fixtures, ceilings, etc.).
Use of cleaning chemicals (ex: sanitizer germicidal detergent disinfectants, deodorizers, odor neutralizers, and deodorants, acidic, alkaline and neutral cleaners, floor strippers, floor finishes for hard and resilient floor surfaces, metal polishes which must be used, applied, and removed in accordance with specific label directions to assure the safety and protection of personnel and property).
Make beds, change linens, collect soiled linens, remove, transport, repackage, dispose and store general waste, regulated medical waste, chemotherapeutic waste and radioactive waste, and may deliver clean linen and supplies.
Check and replenish consumable supplies (e.g.: soap, hand towels, toilet tissue, bottled water, latex gloves, etc.) in the course of cleaning and servicing rooms and areas within the Medical Center.
May remove, transport, repackage, dispose and store sharps as a part of service rendered to clinics in patient rooms, and may replace filled sharps containers with empty containers.
All other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements: The position demands continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing. The work requires the occasional use of heavy powered cleaning equipment (e.g., wall washers, industrial type buffers) weighing over 50 pounds. The duties necessitate considerable dexterity, hand, foot, and eye coordination, and concentration as well as visual acuity to see dirt, dust and debris.
Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.
