This position is located at the Orlando VA Medical Center, and is the fourth-largest VA medical center in the country. The Lead Medical Technician (EKG) performs a variety of diagnostic procedures which include electrocardiograms, treadmill stress tests, holter monitoring, and pacemaker checks.
Duties
The Lead Medical Instrument Technician (EKG) primary responsibility involves operating medical equipment or instruments in connection with a variety of procedures which requires a high degree of judgment. Additional duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Maintains patient cardiac rhythm tracing records in MUSE system and other accompanying documentation.
Ability to troubleshoot various cardiology equipment.
Evaluates test results and patient responses to the extent of determining appropriate machine adjustments in selecting the method and techniques that will yield the best results.
Recognizes evidence of cardiac emergencies, including acute infarction and serious arrhythmias, from tracings and take appropriate action including notification of the physician and initiating cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Receives, enter data scheduling and notifying of procedure date and time n the patient computerized record system.
Maintains and keeps track of the equipment as patients are discharged and transferred.
Identifies and perform minor cardiology equipment user-level corrections and maintain open communication with Biomedical Engineering to notify Biomedical Equipment Support Specialists for in-house or contract services for corrective and preventive maintenance.
Actively works with PAC Manager and Supervisor to oversee all equipment quality management issues including vendor recommended quality control recommendations, equipment malfunctions and repeat analysis processes.
Trains new employees in the areas within his/her technical scope, develops formal orientation, training, and evaluation programs as needed and participates in the evaluation of new employees.
Participates in developing specifications for new equipment requests.
Supports the performance, management and database transmission of ECGs in a manner that ensures patient safety.
Serves as medical facility-level subject matter expert on clinical aspects of ECG acquisition and MUSE database management.
Performs diagnostic procedures such as electrocardiograms, treadmill stress test, holter monitoring, and pacemaker checks.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency: Lead Medical Instrument Technician (EKG) must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d).
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
GS-8 Grade Determinations:
Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. Experience at this level consists of: knowledge of advanced specialized procedures, the pharmacology related to this occupation, and knowledge of related acute disorders and diseases and their effects on organs and methods of treatment. In addition, the candidate must must demonstrate the following technical KSAs.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA's)
1. Knowledge of pharmacology related to specialized procedures.
2. Ability to provide briefings and orientations to hospital staff including physicians.
3. Knowledge of a variety of related acute disorders and diseases, their effects on organs, and methods of treatment.
4. Ability to perform more complex procedures such as SAECG (Signal Averaged ECG), Tilt table monitoring, electrophysiology monitoring, and event monitoring.
5. Ability to provide, or provide for, staff development and training.
6. Ability to manage and supervise employees.
Preferred Experience:
Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification is preferred.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is preferred.
MIT with advance knowledge of advance specialized procedures (EKG/Holter/Pacemaker/Stress testing).
Advance knowledge of equipment, materials, supplies, and able to troubleshoot various cardiology equipment, evaluate test results and patient responses.
