The Lead Medical Instrument Technician Echo-Cardiac Sonographer has the overall responsibility for the coordination and performance of the Cardiology Sections at the Lake Nona Location. This position works closely with the technologists, cardiology supervisor, cardiologists, clinicians, and clerical staff to assure optimum quality control, efficient coordination activities, high quality diagnostic/therapeutic exam results and patient satisfaction.
Duties
The Lead Medical Instrument Technician (Echocardiography) works closely with the technologist, cardiology supervisor, cardiologist, clinicians, and clerical staff to assure optimum quality control, efficient coordination of activities, high quality diagnostic/therapeutic exam results and patients satifaction. Duties include but are not limited to:
Develops and maintains an on-call schedule for MIT echo technicians.
Performs a full range of ultrasound procedures including special complicated examinations for which there may not be standard instructions or procedures.
Performs ultrasound examination at the mastery level.
Maintains records and filed of exams performed on patients. This include patient electronic records, exam requisitions, and sending/retrieving of images in the Picture Archiving Computer System (PACS)
Advises cardiologists, or referring physicians, of significant abnormalities that require their immediate attention and/or visualization while the patient is undergoing examination before they leave the department.
Performs or supervises routine housekeeping duties to assure that the unit area is clean and sanitary.
Develops and maintains a quality control program.
Participates in developing service contract specifications.
Participates in the evaluation of new and established employees.
Works closely with the Supervisory Technician to evaluate candidates for employment, promotion, assessment of competency, disciplinary action, etc.
Assists scheduling staff in prioritizing and maintaining scheduled patients as well as to accommodate emergency patients on a daily basis.
Makes multiple simultaneous setting changes and adjustments in operation of equipment to ensure optimal and accurate results. Based on findings, determines if additional ultrasonic imaging/procedures are necessary to yield definitive diagnostic findings.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements: This section evaluates if you meet the basic requirements for the position and if you can demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of this position. Citizenship. Be a citizen of the United States (U.S.). Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with 38 U.S.C. § 7407(a).
English Language Proficiency. Per VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section A, Paragraph 3j: No person will be appointed under authority of 38 U.S.C., chapter 73 or 74, to serve in a direct patient-care capacity in VHA who is not proficient in written and spoken English.
Licensure or Certification. Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Education. There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Education may be substituted for experience only at the GS-4 and GS-5 levels.
Grandfathering Provision. All individuals employed in VHA in this occupational series or in another occupational series performing the duties as described in the qualification standard on the effective date of this qualification standard, are considered to have met all the qualification requirements for the grade held including positive education that is part of the basic requirements of the occupation.
Grade Determinations: GS-10
Experience: At least 1 year experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. Duties include but are not limited to: Having knowledge of the more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques in order to provide training and supervision in these procedures, to evaluate and initiate performance improvement projects, and to write policies, procedures, and protocols, that pertain to Echocardiography, Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements and the ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels. This would be experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge required in order to provide all aspects of echocardiography services. AND
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs:
1. Advanced knowledge of complex and non-standard treatment and examination procedures and techniques.
2. Ability to plan and assist in the establishment of a completely integrated treatment and examination program.
3. Ability to evaluate new products and equipment and make recommendations concerning developments which would improve operations.
4. Ability to manage the fiscal matters of the functions supervised (which would include fund controls, contracts, and equipment expenditures), forecast resource and equipment needs, and administer the allocated budget.
5. Knowledge of and ability to provide the full range of supervisory duties which would include responsibility for assignment of work to be performed; performance evaluation; selection of staff; and recommendation of awards, advancements, and, when appropriate, disciplinary actions.
Certifications: Registration by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) or by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) as a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) is highly desirable. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Five years experience in outpatient and inpatient echocardiogram laboratory settings. BCLS or ACLS certified. Demonstrates positive effective communication skills and professional behavior that promotes cooperation and teamwork with internal and external customers. Practice good customer service in all work activities. Display courtesy, empathy, tact and respect for patients, families, significant other, and hospital staff members. Remains calm in stressful situations and take appropriate action. Promotes personal and professional integrity in the department. Use the proper chain of command for communication. Demonstrates professional and cooperative behavioral in all aspects of practice. Collaborates with peers in completing unit workload efficiently. Treat all patients and families with dignity and respect. Listen to and honors patient and family perspectives and choices.
