Located within the Central Iowa VAHCS, the primary purpose of this position is to provide Health Care aid to patients within VA Central Iowa Health Care System. The position is responsible for delivering a broad array of health care services throughout the Medical Center, and it's various locations that provide inpatient care, such as but not limited to the living centers.
Duties
Major duties listed but not limited to:
Able to provide care for a group of patients/residents of varying ages
Assists inpatients/residents and families in adhering to infection control principles throughout the facility.
Provides a range of personal care as needed to include bathing, toileting, hair and nail care, and dressing in personal clothing while maintaining privacy and dignity of inpatient/resident.
Assists as needed with eating, drinking, positioning/ turning, ambulating, transferring, and escorting inpatients/residents.
Performs a range of clinical support duties, which include taking, recording vital signs and reporting deviations to the RN.
Performs a complete range of treatment procedures that include: applying simple and complex sterile dressing, assists with inpatient/resident examinations and performs simple treatments such as hot and cold soaks, hot and cold packs, topical medications, foot soaks, sitz baths, etc.
Assists with inventory management and ordering of supplies, placing stock as provided in appropriate storage areas, rotating stock on shelves, replenishing, and removing/replacing outdated items if needed.
Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.
Work Schedule: Days with weekend and off tour rotation

Qualifications

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience (GS-2): Must have at least 3 months of general experience that has equipped applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties as a Health Aid (GS-2). Qualifying general experience includes but is not limited to: providing care for a group of people, assisting with eating, drinking, general cleanliness and other personal care. OR,
Education: Successfully completed the high school level or equivalent
Specialized Experience (GS-3): Have at least 6 months of general experience that has equipped applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties as a Health Aid. Qualifying general experience includes but is not limited to: Providing care for a group of people, assisting with eating, drinking, general cleanliness and other personal care. Providing a range of personal care as needed to include bathing, toileting, hair and nail care, and dressing in personal clothing, laundering and distributing clothing. OR,
Education: Have successfully completed 1 full year of education above the high school level that included study in medical, health, or related fields. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school. OR,
Combination: Possess a combination of education and experience. Equivalent combinations of successfully completed one year above high school level education in medical, health or related fields and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. I understand that my total qualifying experience and total qualifying education are each figured as a percentage of the experience and education required for the GS-3 level of the occupation being filled and the total of the two percentages must equal 100 percent to qualify.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
