Employees in this Dietitian assignment serve as a Dietetic Internship Director and have full responsibility for administering all aspects of an accredited dietetic internship program which includes the overall planning, directing, and oversight of the supervised practice for dietetic interns.
Duties
Dietetic Internship Directors oversee the daily operations of the program and ensure education, curriculum, policies, and procedures are compliant with the ACEND® requirements and are compatible with regulations and procedures for Associated Health Trainees set forth by the VA Office of Academic Affairs (OAA). They serve as a consultant within NFS and with other facility health care professionals regarding current nutrition and food service systems issues, evaluating health care delivery to patients, and designing nutrition related research or performance improvement initiatives. In accordance with ACEND® requirements, Dietetic Internship Directors in VA must be full-time employees. Dietetic Internship Directors spend the majority of time managing the internship program and associated activities. They may have ancillary responsibilities which contribute to the overall function and operation of NFS; however, those ancillary responsibilities will not compromise the ability to successfully manage the required internship program and activities. Duties include but are not limited to:
Develops, documents, tracks, and assesses program goals to ensure the program produces measurable results through evaluation of data and improved program outcomes and customer experience.
Writes the self-study for re-accreditation.
Facilitates the ACEND® site visit.
Maintains up-to-date program information accessible through online sources.
Coordinates program marketing events such as an intern open house, and outreach events.
Executes the selection process for dietetic interns, maintaining all records as required by ACEND ®.
Establishes an intern selection committee, selection criteria for application to the program and reviewing and evaluating all applications prior to selection.
Plans and coordinates intern rotations, class schedules and outside seminars with preceptors, presenters, and community affiliations.
Establishes, administers, maintains, and coordinates affiliations with community programs (local food bank; Women, Infants and Children; etc.) and/or with affiliated universities for the combined master's intern program curriculum.
Coordinates maintenance of affiliation agreements between the VA facility and affiliated agencies.
Resolves policy, program and project issues associated with combined master's program and outside affiliations.
Coordinates preceptor training and ensures ongoing preceptor competency.
Provides direction, orientation, coaching, in-service training, and ongoing educational programs related to the dietetic internship program.
Ensures timely completion of rotation evaluations.
Meets with interns to ensure progress towards program completion. When issues arise, creates action plans that give the intern every opportunity available to meet the requirements for graduation.
Issues the trainee verification statement of internship completion and maintain permanent records as required by ACEND®.
May perform other related duties as assigned which are appropriate for this grade and assignment.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements: May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
a. Citizenship. Be a citizen of the United States (U.S.).
b. English Language. Must be proficient in speaking and writing English.
c. Registration. All applicants must hold the RDN credential from the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) the credentialing agency of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Completed an ACEND® accredited experiential or supervised practice program and provide a verification statement from the program director that conveys eligibility to take the CDR registration exam as a prospective RDN.
d. Education. Earned a bachelor's or higher degree from a U.S. regionally accredited college, university or foreign equivalent.
Preferred Experience: Experience is only creditable if it is post-registration experience as a registered dietitian directly related to the position to be filled, i.e., the clinical dietitian must have relevant clinical nutrition healthcare experience; the food service system dietitian must have relevant food service system management experience. Qualifying experience must also be at a level comparable to dietetic experience at the next lower level.
The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-12.
Specialized Experience: GS-12 Full Performance Level
1 year of experience as a supervisory dietitian equivalent to the next lower grade level.
Demonstrate KSA's 1. Knowledge of best practices in the dietetics profession and in scientific literature, including knowledge of research methods, study design, data collection, interpretation of findings, and translation of rules into nutrition practice. Kniting, regulatory, and agency authorities. 2. Ability to develop and maintain a system of internal reviews and direct quality control and performance improvement studies. 3. Knowledge of computer software programs relative to food service systems.
In addition to the KSAs identified above, candidates for food service systems management positions must demonstrate the following KSAs: a. Ability to direct food service and production with focus on customer acceptance and budgetary guidelines to include principles of menu planning, food purchasing, delivery schedules, and ability to estimate food quantities. b. Ability to develop and maintain a system of internal reviews and direct quality control and performance improvement studies. c. Knowledge of computer software programs relative to food service systems. d. Knowledge of the principles of management required to establish program goals and objectives, to plan and administer a program, coordinate associated activities, evaluate program accomplishments, redefine priorities, solve problems, and modify objectives.

Physical Requirements: The position requires intermittent walking and standing. Carrying normal amounts of written/reference materials is routinely done. Occasionally, duties may require the movement of audio-visual equipment, charts and arrangement of classroom areas.
