About the Position: The incumbent serves as a Safety and Occupational Health (SOH) Specialist assisting the SOH Manager in a Bureau of Medicine & Surgery (BUMED) Military Treatment Facility (MTF). The incumbent is responsible for assisting the SOH Manager in planning, organizing, establishing, implementing, administering, and evaluating a safety and occupational health program covering medical, dental, and medical support facilities on a federal installation.

Duties

Aware of wide range of safety and occupational health concepts. Sufficient oral and written communications to effectively articulate rules and regulations. Ability to integrate construction and non-construction projects into existing programs to evaluate the impact on operations, plan for potential problems. Frequent contacts with co-workers, MTF staff and other division and department heads, directors, and high-ranking command staff; as well as higher headquarters staff.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • The incumbent may be required to work on any day or shift, including night, weekends, holidays, or on an “on call” basis, necessary to meet mission requirements.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes managing safety or occupational health program elements; developing and recommending safety and occupational health policy to higher levels of management; applying safety and occupational health laws, regulations, principles, theories, practices, and procedures to advise on or resolve technical matters dealing with occupational safety and health requirements; developing safety and occupational health standards, regulations, practices, and procedures to eliminate or control potential hazards.. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR Education: Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree with a major study in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Compliance InspectionEducation and TrainingSafety and Occupational Health (SOH) Hazard Control Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-9).
