About the Position: Join us at the United States Southern Command. We provide direct support to a four-star unified Combatant Commander, but are compact enough that our staff also works with senior leadership representatives of our inter-service, inter-agency and (public and private) international partner organizations. Our contribution to furthering our country's relationships with South and Central American nations and peoples are substantial.
Duties
Serves as Deputy Chief for Political-Military Affairs and Policy Division, SCJ5, U.S. Southern Command, a geographic combatant command, responsible for supervising the Political-Military Affairs Division.
Directs the political-military assessment for the region by incorporating the sub regional political-military assessments from the Branch Chiefs.
Supervises the Security/Defense Chiefs Conferences for the three sub-regions, and is prepared to support command contingency operations.
Reviews, interprets, and comments on national security directives and policy documents for the Executive Branch, Departments of Defense, State, Justice, and the Office of the Secretary of Defense and the Joint Staff.
Prepares and reviews Commander testimony, key issues, and talking points on policy, strategy, and regional security issues.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Top Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- This position requires the incumbent to pass the Spanish Foreign Language Proficiency Test at a minimum of a 2/2 (listening/reading/speaking) level of proficiency.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 15% of the time.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Performing supervisory personnel/manpower management functions in determining work assignments, making selections for reserve/National Guard support, evaluating performance, approving and regulating leave, resolving employee complaints, maintaining discipline, identifying and obtaining professional development and necessary training. 2) Directing political-military assessments for the SOUTHCOM AOR, supervising Security/Defense Chiefs Conferences, and supporting command contingency operations. 3) Reviewing, interpreting and commenting on national security directives and policy documents for the Executive Branch, Departments of Defense, State, Justice, and the Office of the Secretary of Defense and the Joint Staff. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-13).
