Duties
Performs preventive maintenance inspections and repairs to buildings, facilities, and equipment using trade techniques, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and painting.
Conducts inspections on structural components of buildings, electrical systems and equipment, plumbing systems, automatic sprinkler systems, and fixtures.
Prepares reports of inspections, corrected deficiencies, and required repairs.
Operates heavy hand tools and power equipment to perform and complete tasks, such as mowing, digging ditches/trenches, grading and sloping, clearing small trees and bushes, etc.
Loads, unloads, separates, stacks, and carries materials, supplies, and packages, weighing up to 40 pounds or more.
Assists with repairs, testing, and adjustments on electrical power plants and substations as well as overhead and underground primary electrical distribution systems.
Contributes to the application of the organization’s Quality Program, identifies deficiencies, and makes recommendations for improvements in work processes.

To qualify for a Maintenance Worker your resume and supporting documentation must support:
Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition. The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is:
Ability to do the work of a Maintenance Worker without more than normal supervision (SOE): I perform the common tasks of the job to be filled but under close supervision, such as performing routine preventive maintenance and repair on buildings, facilities, and equipment; using standard trade practices and guidance material to complete work assignments; preparing reports on inspections, deficiencies, and repairs; operating tools and power equipment to perform tasks, including mowing, trimming tree limbs, digging ditches/trenches, and grading and sloping; determining methods, techniques, devices, and materials needed to repair and/or replace interior/exterior structures, equipment, furnishings, fixtures, etc.; operating motor vehicles to pick up and deliver materials and equipment.
Additional Position Information: The incumbent of this position has been designated as an emergency employee. The term "Emergency Employee" is used to designate those employees who must report to work in emergency situations. Emergency dismissal or closure announcements do not apply to these employees. The employees who occupy these positions may be required to report for duty in any situation that prevents significant numbers of employees in the local area from reporting for work on time or which requires agencies to close all or part of their activities.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Physical Effort: Work requires standing, bending, stooping, reaching, climbing ladders, and working in cramped or awkward positions. Required to lift and carry objects weighing 40 pounds or more.
Working Conditions: Work is performed indoors and outdoors, subject to prevailing weather conditions. Exposed to dirt, dust, noise and fumes. Subject to cuts, scrapes, bruises, electric shock and falls from ladders. Occasionally required to wear protective equipment and clothing that may be uncomfortable. Working conditions are a normal part of the job and are considered in the evaluation.
