About the Position: This position is an Architect in the Engineering Division, Design Branch, Building Systems Section. Under the general supervision of the Chief, Building Systems Design Section, performs work relating to the design and construction of buildings and other facilities at military installations, for civil works projects and other facilities in support of IIS (Interagency, International, Support for Others) missions.

Duties

Review the functional adequacy of structures and prepare specific criteria for general design memorandum, as well as feature specific design memorandum. Review technical specifications and provide corrections. Perform field investigations and inspections of architectural aspects of construction in-progress and completed. Coordinate design efforts between multiple disciplines throughout the District in order to keep projects on schedule and within required cost guidelines. Review and check shop drawings prepared by construction contractors for technical adequacy and conformity with contract requirements, specifications and like considerations. Assist in solving problems brought about by field conditions and utilize these improvements in the design, construction and operation of future projects. Inform supervisor of progress and potentially controversial problems, concerns, issues, or other matters; develops changes to plans and/or methodology; and provides recommendations for improvements in order to meet program objectives.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires you to possess or obtain/maintain a valid, State-issued motor vehicles driver's license since project sites may be located in remote areas that are not accessible by public transportation and to operate a Government vehicle.
  • This position requires travel away from the official worksite (TDY) to other duty locations approximately 20% of the time on an annual basis.

Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in architecture or in a related field that included 60 semester hours of course work in architecture or related disciplines of which at least (1) 30 semester hours were in architectural design, and (2) 6 semester hours were in each of the following: structural technology, properties of materials and methods of construction, and environmental control systems. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: College-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the arts and sciences underlying professional architecture, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the architectural principles, methods, and techniques and their applications to the design and construction or improvement of buildings. The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by at least one of the following: (1) Related Curriculum - Degree in architectural engineering provided the completed course work in architectural engineering provided knowledge, skills, and abilities substantially equivalent to those provided in the courses specified in statement A above, OR (2) Experience: 1 year of experience in an architect's office or in architectural work for each year short of graduation from a program of study in architecture. In the absence of any college courses, 5 years of such experience is required. This experience must have demonstrated that you have acquired a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional architecture. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: GS-12 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Prepares reports and maintains records of work accomplishments and administrative information; 2) Articulates and communicates to the architects and team members on assigned projects; 3) Researches, learns and applies a wide range of qualitative and/or quantitative methods to identify, assess, analyze and improve team effectiveness; and 4) Evaluates technical requirements for each project. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). Specialized experience must be clearly evident in your resume. GS-12: Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
