The purpose of the position is to perform work on conventional/typical preservation projects for a variety of historic structures. This entails the full gamut of types, and includes some new construction, major restoration or rehabilitation, complete stabilization, significant alteration, etc. Pay Rates George Washington Birthplace National Monument, $27.77 - $33.78 per hour Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, $28.97 - $33.78 per hour Shenandoah National Park, $30.20 - 35.31 per hour

Duties

As a Preservationist you will: Use of planers, table saws, jointers, radial saws, band saws, and shapers. Maintain the full range of hand and power masonry tools i.e. skill saw, electric drill, router, chainsaw, sander, table saw, jointer, radial saw, bandsaw, planer, shaper, floor sander, and surfacing machines. Repair, reconstruct, restore, and rehabilitate masonry structures by performing work such as stabilizing or constructing foundations, walls, chimneys, fireplace, and other building elements. Replicate antique and highly skilled forms of craftsmanship using specialized tools. Assist with the inspection of historic structures/sites/landscapes on site to determine physical condition and the type and amount of maintenance required to maintain in proper condition. Read, interpret and apply building plans, specifications, blueprints, sketches, working drawings and building codes. Compute curves, arcs, tangents, and possess advanced knowledge of carpentry and masonry skills utilizing accepted trade methods and techniques. Use a variety of hand and power tools such as trowel, float, hammer, pick, chisel, brick saw, angle grinder, and pneumatic chisel in cutting and shaping stone and repointing, resetting, and relaying masonry. Select appropriate stone and mortar materials to closely match historic fabric in color, texture, and composition, with ability to apply selected materials in a manner appropriate to historic character. Term Appointment This is a term position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of four years, or more based on any changes to regulations governing the number of years term appointments may last, without further competition. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service. The National Park Service retains the right to extend the duration of this appointment after selection and/or appointment, based on changes to the regulation governing the number of years term appointments may last. This change, which may be made at the agency's sole discretion and without further competition, shall not be construed or interpreted as the granting of a right to a selectee or employee to such an extension. No extension to a term appointment shall be granted to a selectee/employee to an amount of time that exceeds the maximum number of years authorized under any present or current regulation, unless such regulation expressly allows such action. Area Information Page, AZ is located on the Arizona-Utah border 135 miles north of Flagstaff, AZ, the nearest larger community. Page looks out on beautiful Lake Powell which offers boating, associated water sports recreation and fishing. The surrounding land of the Glen Canyon NRA offers beautiful red rock country for hiking and backcountry recreational activity. Page is centrally located to many other National Parks: Grand Canyon, Zion, Arches and Canyonlands to name a few. Page offers normal community amenities such as shopping, medical and dental facilities, schools K-12 and college courses available through local Coconino Community College. The area enjoys typical high desert climate with temperatures ranging from 100+ in summer to mid-teens in winter with low humidity and sunshine most days of the year. Elevation:4300 ft. City of Page - Welcome to the City of Page, Arizona Lees Ferry is located near Marble Canyon, AZ. Lees Ferry is about 50 miles from the nearest town of Page, AZ, and 130 miles north of Flagstaff, AZ, the nearest larger community. Lees Ferry is situated along the beautiful Colorado River, 15 miles downstream of the Glen Canyon Dam, and is the launching point for Colorado River trips. The surrounding land of the Glen Canyon NRA offers beautiful red rock country for hiking and backcountry recreational activity. Lees Ferry is centrally located to many other public lands, such as the Grand Canyon North Rim, Vermillion Cliffs, Kaibab National Forest, to name a few. The town of Page offers normal community amenities such as shopping, medical and dental facilities, K-12 schools, and college courses available through local Coconino Community College. The area enjoys typical high desert climate with temperatures ranging from 100+ in summer to mid-teens in winter with low humidity and sunshine most days of the year. Elevation: 3300 ft. Shenandoah NP is 90 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. The park consists of 197,000 acres of land, including 80,000 acres designated as wilderness. It also contains 105 miles of Skyline Drive and 101 miles of the Appalachian Trail. Annual visitation is around 1.3 million, which has direct and extensive economic impact on the surrounding area. The park's natural, cultural and recreational resources are of vital interest to local and regional businesses, political leaders, conservation and outdoor recreation organizations, and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
