This position is located in the Engineering Service at Fayetteville VA Medical Center in Fayetteville, AR. The High Voltage Electrician is responsible to maintain two 1-megawatt stationary emergency generators; an assortment of other standby generators to power the station during commercial power loss; and site's sub-station and transformers, electrical distribution lines, main disconnect panels, and supporting system that exceed the voltage limit of standard electricians (1000VAC).
Duties
The High Voltage Electrician performs duties associated with high voltage electrical maintenance and facility electrical maintenance. Major duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:
Cleaning, adjusting and repairing electrical equipment such as air, oil and vacuum circuit breakers and remote control supervisory and telemetering equipment
Constructing and installing rigid conduits, pulling in conductors, assembling bus bars and phase out and connect conductors
Troubleshooting overhead and underground cable systems to locate shorts, opens, grounds, crosses, electrolysis damage, capacitance imbalance or cable breaks
Checking condition of transformers, switches, capacitor equipment, and cables; transformer operating temperatures and voltage at secondary terminals and make repairs to defective loose or corroded connections; ground wire connections and cables for cracks breaks, breaks corrosion and punctures; and cracks or breaks in walls of manholes or vaults visually
Coordinating testing of insulating oil from transformers and oil switches for breakdown and contamination
Pumping water from manholes, remove debris, and repair ground bonds
Maintaining street and helicopter pad lighting systems; and maintaining and repairing diesel and gas-powered emergency generators and associated equipment
Providing back-up and aid the Facility Electricians, which include the following: Install, modify, repair, maintain, troubleshoot, and test new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment
Working from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and electrical maintenance and repair manuals to plan and lay out the routing, placement type, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity, and sage operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment, and controls
Determining and placing distribution panels, boxes, fittings, and connections and install wiring, couplings, conduit, relays, fixtures, transformers, and other electrical devices including electricals service entrances
Tracing hard-to locate defects or problems and completing repairs and installations with little or no advice
Maintaining and repairing electrical portion of heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, and automatic operating controls, and flame protection devices for the boilers in the Power Plant
Checking the work of contractors for compliance with facility standards and electrical codes
Locating and marking electrical underground utilities prior to excavation
Initiating electronic work orders for deficiencies found in the performance of duties
Requesting preventative maintenance numbers, following procedures established by Engineering Service for newly installed equipment
Contacting vendors to determine current pricing, material availability, and ordering information
Performing other related duties as assigned
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday; 07:30 a.m. to 03:30 p.m.

Qualifications
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Position makes repairs from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms to reach equipment in out-of the-way places. This requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring, and uncomfortable positions. Frequently handles lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds. Occasionally lifts and carries items over 50 pounds with the assistance of others and/or equipment.
WORK CONDITIONS: Work is inside and outside in hot, humid or cold environments. It is usually dusty, dirty, and greasy. Bad smelling fumes are sometimes present. Position is frequently exposed to the possibility of danger from high voltage electrical shock, burns from solder, sometimes serve strains, cuts, burns, noise, eye damage, bruises, and infection and is, therefore, required to use appropriate procedures and personal protective equipment. The position may be required to work with asbestos contaminated materials and will, therefore, be required to use protective clothing and equipment to eliminate possible asbestos exposure.
