The purpose of the position is to serve as an Attorney-Advisory to Federal Mine Safety and Health Review Commission (the Commission) Administrative Law Judges (ALJs). The incumbent will work directly with assigned ALJs to manage cases. They also work on settlements for the Chief Administrative Law Judge (CALJ) with a number of other senior attorneys to ensure the settlements are properly processed.
Duties
The following are the duties of this position at the GS-12. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties and will receive training to help you grow in this position.
Review settlement motions and prepare decisions approving settlements for ALJs.
Prepare draft decisional memoranda for the review of the ALJ.
Conduct or participate in pretrial or prehearing conferences with industry representatives, defendants, or petitioners and their attorneys, explain points of law, charges, or qualifications of claimants, and refers suggested settlements or compromise offers to superiors with appropriate recommendations.
Receive and respond to email and telephone inquiries of a legal nature from private individuals and attorneys.
Monitor the status of ALJs' dockets using the Commission's electronic case management system (eCMS).
Qualifications
You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
Basic Requirements (Attorney-Advisor): Applicants must (1) be a graduate of an accredited law school with an LL.B. or J.D.; and (2) be a current member of a bar with a valid license to practice law in a state, territory of the United States, District of Columbia, or Commonwealth of Puerto Rico; and (3) meet all basic requirements as described for this position.

Education
Education Requirements: The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
