About the Position: The person in this position will provide an independent comprehensive range of clinical services to both inpatients and outpatients and their families, including providing psychotherapy to the individual or family system, as well as coordinating and implementing discharge plans as a member of the medical and/or surgical inpatient teams.
This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the Department of Defense to recruit.
Duties
Provide individual, family, and group clinical counseling services to identify and manage personal, psychological, and interactive problems associated with occupation and personal adjustment.
Develop individual treatment plans based on psychiatric diagnosis, identified problems, and treatment needs for each case.
Collect bio-psycho-social information about patients using interview, case history, and observation techniques and assessment methods.
Analyze information collected to determine diagnosis, treatment plan and/or advisability of counseling or referral to other specialists or institutions.
Evaluate treatment effectiveness and adjust patient's treatment plans as appropriate.
Develop and deliver curriculum on behavioral health topics relevant to primary care.
Willingness to coach and train residents in communication in patient exam room.
Requirements
- A one year probation to assess your ability to perform supervisory duties is required unless previously completed.
- Employees assigned to this position may be designated as Mission Essential and assume Essential Personnel status during inclement/weather/emergencies.
- The incumbent may be required to work on any day or shift; including PMs, nights, weekends, holidays, or on an "on call" basis, necessary to meet mission requirements.
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
- This position requires the incumbent to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
- Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
- This position may have specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement for Social Worker:
Degree: Master's degree (or higher degree) in social work from a school accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. Please note: you must provide a copy of your transcript.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes conducting bio-psychosocial evaluations, providing individual or group therapy, and developing behavioral health treatment plans or recommendations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
Education
FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
