These positions are temporary and may not exceed 1039 hours (six months) in a service year. They may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs. Selectee(s) may be moved between duty stations within park boundaries. Positions may not be filled at every duty station.

Duties

The parks and duty stations hiring for these positions are below, as is each park's anticipated seasonal period. The typical seasonal period varies due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Alaska Regional Office (Anchorage, AK): May - September Denali National Park and Preserve (Denali Park, AK):April - November Kenai Fjords National Park (Seward, AK):May to October Southeast Alaska Network (Juneau, AK): May to October The position involves field and office duties including but not limited to the following: Installing, calibrating, and retrieving data from remote environmental monitoring equipment, including weather stations, water quality sondes, stream gauges, acoustic monitoring devices, remote cameras, and other electronic equipment. Taking samples and/or manual measurement of environmental parameters such as stream flow, collecting water samples, and audibility. Navigating to remote backcountry sites and using GPS and topographic maps to map landscape features and record associated data. Using computer software to statistically analyze physical science based natural resource monitoring data. Preparing draft figures and reports describing and summarizing weather and hydrology data. Writing detailed draft reports on the methods and operating procedures for the physical science portion of an environmental monitoring program. At the GS-07 level, duties will include management of data. Physical Demands: The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking, and bending often required. Heavy items (e.g., equipment and packs up to 50 pounds) must be lifted and carried on a routine basis. Working Conditions: The work is performed in an office, laboratory, and in the field. Field work includes exposure to extreme weather and terrain conditions, poisonous plants, biting insects, and wild animals. Laboratory work may involve exposure to hazardous chemicals. The position requires extended travel in the backcountry, on and off trail, over rough steep terrain under inclement weather conditions. Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-11/06/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time number of hours worked per week. If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position, you must meet the following Selective Factor: This position requires experience installing environmental monitoring instrumentation and data collection equipment. (Must be addressed in your resume or you will be rated ineligible.) Candidates who do not meet this requirement by close of this announcement will receive no further consideration for this position. - AND - In addition, to qualify for this position at the GS-06 grade level, you must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sector) that is directly related to the position to be filled. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: participating in physical sciences research or natural resource-based studies; collecting environmental monitoring data such as water quality and quantity, atmospheric chemistry or air quality; and setting-up remote environmental monitoring equipment such as weather stations, acoustic monitors, or water-quality sondes. You must include hours worked per week in your resume. To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level in Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sector) that is directly related to the position to be filled. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: collecting data and drafting reports for physical sciences research or natural resource-based studies; collecting and analyzing environmental monitoring data such as water quality and quantity, atmospheric chemistry or air quality; and setting-up and managing remote environmental monitoring equipment such as weather stations, acoustic monitors, or water-quality sondes. You must include hours worked per week in your resume. -OR- EDUCATION: Successfully completed one full academic year of graduate level education (18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours) from an accredited college or university. Education must be in a course of study that is directly related to this position, such as physics. You must include a copy of your transcripts. -OR- A COMBINATION OF SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: To combine education and experience, first take the number of semester hours or equivalent earned towards a graduate degree and divide by 18 semester hours or equivalent. Then take the number of months of full-time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100% to qualify. You must include a copy of your transcripts and hours worked per week in your resume. Volunteer experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

There is no substitution of education for experience at the GS-06 grade level of this announcement.
