The Truman VA is recruiting for a Pharmacy Tech (Controlled Substance & Automated Cabinet Dispensing)

Duties

The Technician functions in association with the controlled substances vault, and is the technical expert in automated dispensing cabinets such as Pyxis MedStation technologies. S/he must display meticulous attention to detail and set high personal standards for accuracy and accountability. The technician has secondary responsibilities as a staff technician in any area of Pharmacy Service. S/he works independently under established procedures, and receives supervisory guidance from pharmacists in various duty locations. Completed work is checked by the responsible pharmacist. Guidance is always available from a pharmacist, and must be sought when clarification is needed. Serves as facility automated dispensing cabinet expert working closely with all staff to assure safe and accurate medication dispensing. Updates and maintains automated dispensing cabinets based upon review and analysis of reports. Independently analyzes current state, develops solutions for issues, and performs system setup or modification. Leads and assists in the installation, expansion, and upgrading of automated dispensing cabinet software and hardware. Applies working knowledge to perform daily maintenance and minor repairs to automated dispensing cabinet systems. Responds to all customer service inquiries and communicates with company representatives regarding software and cabinet issues. Manages the automated dispensing cabinet database, issues and revokes access in keeping with facility practice, maintains cabinet security. Displays in-depth knowledge of the facility controlled substance dispensing policies and practices including oral, parenteral, and automated dispensing cabinet based services. Secondarily serves as a Controlled Substance Technician responsible for operations and security in controlled substance distribution, and the Pyxis C-II Safe. Maintains controlled substance dispensing and related records. Strictly adheres to controlled substance law, policy, and practices. Receives and unpacks controlled substances, adhering to special handling, accountability, and storage requirements. Checks for order shortages, tampering, breakage, deterioration, and expiration. Immediately informs supervisor of issues. Other related duties as assigned. General Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 8:00am - 4:30pm; schedule may be adjusted to meet the needs of the facility and may occasionally work weekends. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education or Experience: A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience. Certification. Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). All persons employed in VHA in this occupation on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series and grade held, including positive education and licensure/certification/registration that are part of the basic requirements of the occupation. Grade Determinations: GS-7 Pharmacy Technician Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower level (GS-6) and must fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to independently gather, evaluate, and analyze data to generate reports and/or for other projects/statistical purposes. Knowledge of pharmacy policies and procedures sufficient to train and orient new employees and other staff Comprehensive knowledge of the operation and care of specialized pharmaceutical equipment. Comprehensive knowledge of the procurement and formulary process. Comprehensive knowledge of investigational drug policies and procedures. Comprehensive knowledge of controlled substance policies and procedures, and the ability to identify and investigate discrepancies in these policies and procedures. Comprehensive knowledge of, and ability to, analyze data in VA information systems. Preferred Experience: Three years of experience with controlled substance handling Three years of experience with CSI inspections Three years of experience with automatic dispensing systems Three years of experience with credit card handling References: VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G28 The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-7. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-7. Physical Requirements: Principle duties require repetitive use of hands and fingers. May require lifting and carrying light loads (up to 44 lbs.), including boxes, equipment, unit dose-cassettes, and IV solutions; stooping or kneeling; sitting, walking or standing for long periods of time (4-8 hours). Normal ranges of hearing and vision are required to perform work and communicate effectively; must have the visual ability to distinguish between basic colors and shades of color. An ability to perform tasks requiring rapid mental and muscular coordination functions simultaneously is necessary. Must be physically capable of operating various types of equipment used for the job.
