This includes dispensing that occurs in the inpatient pharmacy, outpatient pharmacy, ambulatory infusion pharmacy, and, when applicable, in remote sites such as the Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs). The lead pharmacy technician operates in a broad delegation of authority to modify daily assignments of lower graded pharmacy technicians, based on available staff, to meet the daily goals and needs of the department. The lead pharmacy technician is expected to function in the capacity of a Pharmacy Technician at full performance in any area of competency as staffing requirements dictate. The lead pharmacy technician is responsible for training new pharmacy technicians in the workflow and technical tasks of their assigned area. The lead pharmacy technician has an accessory duty to cover absences of other GS-8 technician positions that may include, but are not limited to, narcotic vault(s), clinical support technician, and sterile compounding technicians. Work Schedule: Full-time; Various shifts available Recruitment Incentive (Sign-on Bonus): Not Authorized Permanent Change of Station (Relocation Assistance): Not Authorized Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of existing pay, higher or unique qualifications, or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade). Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year) Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience. Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child. Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education or Experience: For all grade levels and positions that accept both education and experience to qualify, equivalent combinations of qualifying education and experience that total at least 100% are qualifying. The combined percentage is determined by adding total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level to the education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level. Certification: Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT); OR National Healthcareer Association (NHA), Certified Pharmacy Technician (ExCPT). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). All persons employed in VHA in this occupation on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series and grade held, including positive education and licensure/certification/registration that are part of the basic requirements of the occupation. Grade Determinations: GS-8 Lead Pharmacy Technician Qualifying experience: One year of experience equivalent to the next lower level (GS-7). Certification: For positions above the full performance level, the employee must pass a national certification exam and hold an active national certification through either: PTCB as a CPhT; OR NHA as a ExCPT. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs). In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: Comprehensive knowledge of concepts, principles, methodology and policies in a specialized area or section of pharmacy (such as sterile compounding, controlled substances, automation, clinical pharmacy, contact center, etc.) Note: See Specialized Area.in the Definitions Section. Skill in training and orienting new and existing pharmacy facility employees and students on proper policies and procedures. Ability to evaluate, analyze and coordinate workflow and work activities within a specialized area or section of the pharmacy. Preferred Experience: At least two years of pharmacy technician experience. At least two years of experience in a leadership role with the ability to evaluate and coordinate workflow of lower graded technicians. At least three years of experience using automated systems. At least three years of experience using VA software. References: VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G28. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-8. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-8. Physical Requirements: Principle duties require repetitive use of hands and fingers. May require lifting and carrying light loads (up to 44 lbs.), including boxes, equipment, unit dose-cassettes, and IV solutions; stooping or kneeling; sitting, walking or standing for long periods of time (4-8 hours). Normal ranges of hearing and vision are required to perform work and communicate effectively; must have the visual ability to distinguish between basic colors and shades of color. An ability to perform tasks requiring rapid mental and muscular coordination functions simultaneously is necessary. Must be physically capable of operating various types of equipment used for the job.
